Why are we being asked as citizens to label ourselves? Think back to standardized testing where you are asked if you're Hispanic or Caucasian or Native American - as if we can't be more than one category. And "prefer not to answer" is often not a choice. (In school, I think if you answered outside their categorization they would change the answer anyways). I expressed my personal reason for disliking these questions, but... if we should not be discriminated due to skin color or ethnicity, then why are we asked in so many ways to identify ourselves in that light. Why is it even a question? It does not define us. (I am fair skinned, but I have Hispanic ancestors as well as European - i am labeled "white" in our society, or Caucasian if folks are feeling fancy) These questions lend to a deeper topic about the other side of discrimination due to skin color (commonly called racism). These questions are asked by employers as well. And are used for discriminatory purposes. Not to prevent, but to prioritize. Prioritize diversity in age and skin color. Some with lesser merit are hired to "avoid discrimination". And in recent news, actors should only voice animated characters that match their skin pigment. That is discrimination. The right person for ANY role should not be overlooked due to artificial reasons.
