As a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer on Stryker’s Neurosurgical New Product Development team, you will play a key role in designing and developing innovative medical devices that enhance patient care globally. This position supports the Integrated Systems & Smart Accessories team within the Neurosurgical business unit, focusing on the development of Stryker’s next-generation Highspeed Drill Platform. You’ll be involved throughout the entire product development cycle—from concept through launch—collaborating with cross-functional R&D teams to deliver high-quality, impactful solutions using sound engineering practices.

You will need to live within commuting distance to our Portage, Michigan office for this hybrid position. You will need to be onsite a minimum of three days a week, with flexibility to work from home on other days.
What you will doLead the research, design, development, modification and evaluation of advanced mechanical systems, for medical devices ensuring optimal performance and innovation.
Apply advanced engineering theories, principles, and concepts while mentoring others in technical problem-solving and continuous improvement.
Collaborate across R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing, and Project Management teams to ensure project success and deliver high-quality products that meet business objectives.
Translate user needs and requirements into clear design inputs and specifications, producing complex system-level designs.
Conduct and guide advanced prototyping and testing to ensure the selection of appropriate methodologies for validating designs and resolving issues.
Lead the resolution of complex product design issues, driving continuous improvements in design, quality, and performance.
Lead technology exploration efforts, influencing how new and emerging technologies are applied to meet business and customer needs.
Develop invention disclosures, patents, or trade secrets, contributing to the intellectual property strategy and strengthening the company’s competitive edge.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics or a related discipline
Minimum of 6 years of relevant R&D work experience in a cross-functional teams
Experience developing and optimizing complex mechanical or electro-mechanical assemblies, with a strong understanding of DFM principles
Experience creating engineering drawings, 3D modeling, applying GD&T, and using CAE tools
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, including injection molding, sewing, and high-speed automated assembly to support complex product development
Advanced sketching and/or 3D software skills (CREO preferred)
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain moderately complex plans and technical details to team members
Experience in early-phase concept development and mentoring less experienced engineers
Experience working in a regulated environment (e.g., medical devices, aerospace, automotive)
Experience in Human Factors Engineering or Human-Device Interaction
