Reality Labs Research (RL-R) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers with the shared goal of developing AR and VR across the spectrum. The Surreal research group at RL-R is seeking exceptional engineers and technical leads to solve the next generation of research challenges on the path to building future machine perception enabled technologies. We are looking for talented engineers to architect and build the next-generation research device of Project Aria. We are building this research device to understand the world from a human's perspective and lay the foundation for AI and AR experiences on future AR glasses.In this role, you will design and implement advanced real-time smart glasses capabilities on custom embedded computer vision/machine learning processors. You will then make them available to an extensive internal and external user community by developing and maintaining an SDK and associated tools that increase adoption and accelerate research.

Research Engineer, On-device Machine Perception Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute engineering development to advance the state-of-the-art in machine perception research for Contextualized AI
- Collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, and product managers across machine perception teams at Meta to design, architect and implement prototypes
- Debug complex, system-level, multi-component issues that typically span across multiple layers from sensor to application
- Lead major initiatives, projects, roll-outs and phased-releases
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years experience working in large scale C++ and Python code base
- 2+ years of experience developing and prototyping machine perception algorithms
- Demonstrated knowledge with API/SDK design in the context of hardware devices
- Experience developing, debugging, and shipping software products on large code bases that span platforms and tools
- Experience with software development processes including: source control, bug tracking, and design documentation
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Robotics or related technical field
- Experience with low-level programming (DSPs, MCUs, etc) and mobile accelerators
- Experience with mobile (Android or iOS)
- Experience in contributing to open-source projects
