One of our most challenging new fields is Microelectronics Design and Applications (MDA), which combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical new energy-efficient computing systems. MDA is seeking a Lab Engineer with demonstrated ability to support our innovative MDA team in support of emerging supercomputing technologies.
What You’ll Get to Do:
- Support test operations and test development activities by ensuring that the labs and systems are test ready, specifically for superconducting electronics test environments.
- Responsible for coordination and control of program assets and maintenance, to include: calibration activities, consumables, and general upkeep of cryogenic test systems.
- Candidate will be point of contact for all manner of installations, repairs and deliveries of test equipment and test systems.
This position will serve on-site at our Advanced Technologies Laboratory located in Linthicum, MD.
This position can be filled at the Principal Lab Engineer or Sr. Principal Lab Engineer
Qualifications for each level below
Basic Qualifications for Principal Lab Engineer:
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with 5 years of experience, or a master’s degree in STEM discipline with 3 years of experience, or a PhD in STEM with 0 years of experience
- Knowledgeable in the use of at least one of the following languages: MATLAB, Python, C, or C++
- Well established trouble shooting and system integration experience
- Strong analytic skills and familiarity in performing statistical analysis.
- Knowledgeable in techniques used in the fabrication of Integrated Circuits as well as a basic understand of device physics principles.
- Experience programming and automating test hardware
- Demonstrated ability to communicate cross-functionally and interpret information across multiple engineering disciplines and operations
- Experience leading projects with the ability to communicate effectively to team members both written and verbally
- Demonstrated experience with the MS Office Suite (SharePoint, Excel, Word, Project, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat
- Ability to quickly self-learn relevant subject matter from a variety of new disciplines
- This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with poly clearance per business requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with 8 years of experience, or a master’s degree in STEM discipline with 6 years of experience, or a PhD in STEM with 3 years of experience
- Knowledgeable in the use of at least one of the following languages: MATLAB, Python, C, or C++
- Well established trouble shooting and system integration experience
- Strong analytic skills and familiarity in performing statistical analysis.
- Knowledgeable in techniques used in the fabrication of Integrated Circuits as well as a basic understand of device physics principles.
- Experience programming and automating test hardware
- Demonstrated ability to communicate cross-functionally and interpret information across multiple engineering disciplines and operations
- Experience leading projects with the ability to communicate effectively to team members both written and verbally
- Demonstrated experience with the MS Office Suite (SharePoint, Excel, Word, Project, etc.) and Adobe Acrobat

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in superconducting electronics and associated test platforms test platforms
- Familiarity working with cryogens and/or cryogenic test systems, wet or dry
- Experience using the Atlassian product suite (i.e., Jira, Confluence) in an agile environment
- Adept at leading small teams of engineers and/or technicians
- Ability to adjust to changing priorities and requirements
- Demonstrated experience in common Systems Engineering functions (e.g., requirements capture and management, system diagram and goal definition and updates, etc.)
- Active TS/SCI with poly clearance per business requirements
Salary Range: $105,400 - $158,000
Salary Range 2: $131,100 - $196,700
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
