How will you make an impact in this role?
The Capital Planning team is part of the Global Treasury organization and is responsible for capital management activities across the firm. The team administers the firm’s internal capital adequacy assessment processes and capital policy ensuring adequate capital to meet solvency protection and franchise continuity objectives. Capital Planning is responsible for ensuring the right amount of capital is in the right place at the right time with the right controls to support Treasury’s vision of a durable balance sheet that enables growth and withstands shocks. The capital planning team plays an integral role in analyzing and advising on capital distributions strategies including dividends and share repurchases, enterprise stress testing, capital adequacy monitoring and reporting, capital ratio analysis, regulatory capital, balance sheet forecasting, and the creation and execution of the firms’ capital plan.
The Director – Capital Planning and Basel III Transformation will play a key role in leading the firm’s preparation to meet Basel III Endgame capital rules. The role will be heavily involved in interpreting and analyzing complex regulatory rules and communicating clearly with internal stakeholders, regulators and rating agencies. The Director will work closely with business partners to develop strategies to integrate new capital requirements into enterprise business decisions and uplift existing processes to comply with the final rules. The remit will also include incorporating the new Basel III rules into internal capital adequacy and assessment processes, stress-testing, forecasting, capital allocation decisioning, the capital management framework, capital plan, and capital policy. The Director will play a key role in preparing the firm for bank category transition. Additionally, the Director will gain exposure to balance sheet management and capital distribution strategies, interact with senior leaders, and lead a high-performing team.
Responsibilities
- Prepare the firm to comply with Basel III Endgame capital rules and Bank Category Transition requirements
- Stay abreast of regulatory updates and interpret capital rules
- Analyze and quantify regulatory requirement impacts on American Express
- Communicate rule interpretations, decision points, and impacts with stakeholders
- Engage with regulators and rating agencies to educate and advocate on capital related topics
- Develop strategies to integrate new capital requirements into enterprise business decisions
- Uplift internal capital adequacy assessment framework and capital policy to comply with Basel III Endgame and Bank Category Transition requirements
- Evaluate Basel III Endgame and Bank Category Transition requirements as they relate to risk modeling, stress-testing, balance sheet forecasting, capital management, and regulatory reporting
- Perform gap assessment of operational capabilities; identify data needs and system uplifts
- Partner with a cross-functional teams including Global Funding, Corporate Planning and Analysis, Risk Finance, Controllership, Tax, Capital Enterprise Management Office, Risk, Regulatory Reporting, Market Risk Oversight Group, and Technology to create enhancement plans.
- Drive implementation of capability enhancements to meet evolving regulatory landscape
- Update and strengthen governance activities and capital management documentation
- Support project Fast Forward program management
- Lead a team of high-performing managers and analysts to drive results and generate value-add ideas and analytics
Qualifications
- Balance sheet management experience particularly with regards to capital
- Knowledge of Basel III capital requirements
- Experience with capital adequacy assessment and stress testing
- Experience analyzing and interpreting regulatory rules
- Ability to communicate complex topics clearly
- Experience interacting with and preparing material for regulators
- Knowledge of Treasury disciplines and AXP financial statements
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Highly proficient in Excel and PowerPoint
- Excellent analytical abilities and attention to detail
- Strategic thinker who turns strategies into actionable plans
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate agility

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
