Position Overview:

The Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, Georgia is seeking a Technologist. The person in this role will report to the Electron Optics lab Leader. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing support in the Electron Optics lab that uses advance electron microscopy techniques for microstructural investigations as well as the Topography lab for spectrophotometric and colorimetric analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates personal commitment to safety and good EHS awareness by following established safety rules and practices during all activities. Ensure all user and visitors are compliant with all Safety Absolutes and other EHS initiatives.
  • Carry out routine, as well as complex Electron Optics task requests from project leaders through our LIMS system.
  • Prepare samples for TEM/STEM investigations using electropolishing, ion milling, and FIB lift out tequniques.
  • Conduct Electron Microscopic investigations on samples of aluminum alloys as well as other metal systems for purposes of metallurgical assessment or defect analysis.
  • Use confocal microscopy to quickly characterize 2D/3D representations of aluminum alloy surfaces to support ongoing research projects.
  • Carry out routine spectrophotometric and colorimetric testing using nondestructive handheld equipment.

 

Qualifications

  • Entry to this level typically requires a minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in Electron Microscopy and/or thermal analysis and a BS in chemistry, metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent.
  • Hands on experience working in an Electron Microscopy lab with an emphasis on material science. Experience with electron microscopy of Aluminum systems is advantageous.
  • Basic knowledge in the following techniques is required:
  • Secondary and Backscattered Electron Imaging, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDXS), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD)
  • Must be Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • The ability to acquire new knowledge, capability, and skills in Electron Microscopy as well as Confocal Microscopy and other surface topography techniques.
  • Desire and ability to collaborate and communicate across functions are essential to this position.
