About the Role:

The Tax Practice in FTI Consulting are seeking a Consultant / Senior Consultant to support the senior team. As well as providing indirect tax advice to clients the team also prepares and submits a number of VAT returns together with supporting our insolvency practice in relation to VAT compliance. We are a member of the WTS international network which specialises in the outsourcing of the tax compliance function. Consequently, referrals to assist with tax compliance are increasing. The role will primarily involve taking ownership of the UK VAT compliance offering including VAT return and registrations together with improving the VAT compliance systems and processes.

The role will also involve providing VAT advice either related to the compliance activities or supporting the senior team with projects and transactions as required.

You must be highly organised, have a good attention to detail and being able work to deadlines. Experience with preparing VAT returns for partly exempt entities would be advantageous but not essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the VAT compliance portfolio, acting as the lead with clients and dealing with HMRC queries
  • Assistance with ensuring the VAT compliance process is in accordance with Making Tax Digital with effect from 1 April 2019
  • Leading on advice and VAT compliance in respect of insolvency engagements undertaken by the Corporate Finance group
  • Improving the VAT compliance process and strengthening the review procedures
  • Delegate tasks and lead the junior team in their day to day work
  • Undertaking compliance obligations for clients (i.e. VAT registration applications and option to tax notifications)
  • Providing advice to clients on VAT compliance matters
  • Assisting with due diligences
  • Assisting the senior team with specific VAT engagements
  • Providing advice to clients on their compliance procedures and supporting the Senior Accounting Officer certification process
  • Actively keep up to date on technical matters and deal with detailed technical queries raised, coordinating the preparation of practical, robustly supported advice
  • Undertaking training both for clients and internally as required

    Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (2.1) or equivalent

    Experience Required:

  • Demonstrable experience of VAT with a focus on compliance from either an in-house or practice role
  • Experience and clear technical knowledge of indirect tax
  • Experience within real estate tax would be an advantage but not critical
  • Demonstrable skills at building and maintaining relationships with colleagues within and outside the VAT and tax teams

    Skills and Competencies Required:

  • An ability to communicate (verbal and written) complex technical issues in a straight forward and practical way to tax and non-tax specialists
  • Strong analytical skills and an eye for detail
  • Outgoing and personable and able to integrate with a team and interact with colleagues of all grades
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload under pressure
  • Proven ability to take ownership of projects and come to decisions independently whilst being supported by the senior team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
