Why we’re hiring

Alloy is rapidly growing and seeking a Lead Data Engineer. As a member of the Data Science team, you’ll help make our products more intelligent, and help our customers defeat fraud rings and financial criminals. You’ll get to work with a modern tech and data science stack - Postgres, Python (pandas, scikit-learn, jupyter), AWS, Node, React - that values collaboration, working reproducibly, and the craft of good software engineering practices. You’ll be a valued member of a friendly and experienced engineering team, working closely with backend and frontend engineers. Our data team's culture values curiosity, learning, connecting data to Alloy's strategy, open source tools, rigor, and a spirit of relentless resourcefulness.

If you are analytical, good at tackling big, complex questions, and like the pace and career growth opportunities afforded by working at a fast-growing early stage startup, then we'd like to meet you!

What you’ll be doing

As the Lead Data Engineer at Alloy, you'll:

  • Design, build, and monitor reliable data pipelines that ensure that the right data is available in the right structure and form, supporting both our modeling efforts and our customer-facing application. On a given day, this work might entail:
  • Intelligently refreshing training data sets as new data becomes available
  • Building microservices that show the distribution of a particular element or feature cut by various dimensions, helping our product team show how an application compares to other historic applications
  • Analyze and review existing normalization patterns inside our application database, identifying opportunities to improve how we model and store customer data as well as strategies for entity resolution
  • Support 'data back' from customers, building pipelines that reliably ingest fraud closure and LTV data provided in a variety of formats
  • Design, build, and monitor reliable ETL pipelines to ingest application or transaction data from customers and queue up batch jobs against our API
  • Work with our DevOps team to analyze and improve database performance
Who we’re looking for

Reporting to the Head of Data Science, a successful applicant will likely have a blend of experience or interests that spans DevOps, Data Science, Backend Engineering and AWS/Data Architecture skillsets. Because these skillsets are so varied, we can envision applicants with a number of different backgrounds being successful in the role.

  • Engineers with Python and Node experience who are excited about machine learning and modeling, and want an opportunity to gain experience working closely with data science teams.
  • Data scientists with some software engineering experience who want to get deeper into cloud architecture / AWS / backend engineering.
  • DevOps / database architects with some Python and Node experience who want to get deeper into data science and machine learning.

The seniority level for this position is mid-to-senior, and as such, successful applicants will have two or more years professional experience as a Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Backend Engineer, Data Architect, or DevOps Engineer.

In addition to prior experience, we strongly value candidates who are curious, humble, quick learners, and strong communicators. Having strong organizational and prioritization skills will help you navigate the changes in company structure, product strategy and mix of job responsibilities that are inherent to a growing startup.

We’re especially interested in candidates who:
  • Are comfortable working with the Python libraries scikit-learn, pandas, numpy, and matplotlib
  • Have prior professional experience writing javascript, especially node.js
  • Have extensive Postgresql experience
  • Majored in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or Machine Learning

We are a lean team, so your impact will be felt immediately. If this all sounds like a good fit for you, why not join us?
