What You Will Do

As a R&D Electrical Design Engineer, you will perform the electrical hardware design on complex embedded systems projects, including those in fields such as power tools, motor control, localization, and high-speed wired/wireless communication.  In this role, you will drive all aspects of circuit board design from concept to production for embedded medical devices that supports our cordless orthopaedic power tool product lines.  These systems are for instrumentation used by Orthopedic Surgeons to allow them to plan and perform their procedures.

Technical Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop electrical components for medical devices.
  • Apply circuit and electrical system test methods.
  • Assist, conduct or design prototyping and bench testing.
  • Support or conduct problem solving, identify potential solutions, and evaluate them against requirements.
  • Under supervision, conduct research and studies to support product design.
  • Translate design inputs to engineering specifications and produce component and sub-system level designs.
  • Support creation of embedded systems requirements/architecture for new products leading to engineering PCB assembly board-spins/bring-ups and finally to a finished product.
  • Assist, conduct or design, analysis for electromagnetic compliance (EMC), reliability, safety, cost and design for manufacturing/assembly/test.

Business Responsibilities:

  • Interpret customer needs and understands design inputs.
  • Understand the product’s intended use and clinical procedures.

Med Device Compliance:

  • Understand fundamental industry standards, design requirements and test strategies which align with regulatory requirements.
  • With supervision, create or refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file per company design control procedures.
  • Follow R&D procedures like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success and contribute to the project as a team member.
  • Learn procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology required.
  • Work on problems in limited scope; purposefully learn while gaining experience.
  • Demonstrate ownership and integrity of work.
  • Build stable relationships.

What You Need

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or other related discipline

0+ years of experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: What you will need (strongly desired):

Technical Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of electrical components and manufacturing methods.
  • Basic ability to read and interpret electrical drawings.
  • Basic understanding of the electrical design process.
  • Knowledge of design and concept generation, Cadence SPB, OrCAD, Perforce, Salae Logic and/or equivalent circuit design and simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of analysis tools and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of system components and associated requirements.

Preferred Skills / Engineering tools:

  • Basic knowledge with concept-to-production engineering, including high level design, detailed design, schematic entry, analog simulation, layout management, prototype assembly logistics, board bring-up, lab debugging, system integration, design verification, and manufacturing handoff.
  • Basic understanding application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the field of electrical engineering, including but not limited to power supplies, precision low level analog designs, A/D and D/A converters, battery chargers and monitor circuits and FPGA designs.
  • Knowledge of electrical design process, electrical components, and manufacturing methods
  • Knowledge of circuit design fundamentals with experience in analog, digital, mixed-signal, and/or power electronics.
  • Knowledge in printed circuit board design processes and software tools for schematic entry, simulation, and board layout
  • Able to assist in prototype assembly, rework, board bring-up, and testing/debugging
  • Able to determine and design test methods for circuit or systems designs based on requirements.
  • Able to assist in circuit board manufacturing processes and experience transferring designs to production suppliers
  • Demonstrated mechanical/electrical problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with PCBA, CAD tools (PCB Designer)- preferred
  • Programming/Simulation (C, C++, Matlab, Pspice, Simulink, LabVIEW)- preferred
