ABOUT CONDE NAST LEGAL
The Conde Nast Legal & Policy team is led by the General Counsel and is led from our International HQs in London and New York. Our team also comprises our Legal teams based in our various markets around the world. We are also supported by a network of outside counsel where necessary.

Our Purpose is to help our business, shareholder and colleagues:

  • Make more informed decisions;

  • Solve and prevent legal and business problems;

  • Conduct business in the right way (and prove that they have done so);

  • Protect their assets, brands and people

For the next possible date we are looking for a Legal Counsel (All genders welcome!) based in Munich. This role reports into the Head of Legal Europe.

CONTEXT
Our markets are changing rapidly and so are the needs of our Clients. As we evolve from being a predominantly print based publisher into a truly global, brand focused digital media and entertainment company, our routes to market are becoming more diverse and more complex. This is leading to an increase in the number of different sales models we must maintain and a growth in the complexity of deals we are making. At the same time, this is taking place against a backdrop of rapid change in the regulatory context for digital advertising, marketing, copyright and data laws. In order to respond to these changes, and because we cannot realise the opportunities of the digital marketplace without also managing the risks that are inherent within it, we have created a new and globally integrated approach to legal advice combining skills across all legal disciplines, with a particular focus on:

1. Content and Media Law
2. Digital, Revenue and Consumer
3. Employment and Compliance
4. Corporate and Regulatory

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

You will play a strategic role in developing and delivering our advice to Conde Nast Germany, with a particular focus on our Revenue, Digital and Consumer teams in Germany. This is a new role where you will be asked to work with sales, revenue and consumer leaders based in Germany, advising them on the implementation of their strategies and transactions whilst at the same time ensuring alignment with our global policies and frameworks. More specifically, the purpose of your role is to help our:

(a) Sales Teams: deliver their deals in a timely way, handle negotiations, protect revenue, remain compliant with relevant laws and CN policies and guidelines, enhance their understanding of key legal issues and ensure they are supported by efficient legal services in line with the global L&P team;
(b) Brand and Licensing Teams: Use our brands in new and diverse ways to help truly release their potential in a variety of product, media and digital channels, including new opportunities in the metaverse;
(c) Digital and Ad Tech Teams: Build the runway and operational capability upon which our revenue activity can take place and be delivered;
(d ) Talent and Event Teams: Acquire the rights and contractual flexibility necessary to successfully partner with talent in the creative and sales process and also ensure we can stage first class and impactful events;
(e) Consumer Teams: maximise the potential that social media and other digital marketing techniques offer to ourselves and our Clients in a way that protects our and their assets, brands and reputations whilst at all times remaining legally compliant;
(f) As sole Counsel in market you will be relied upon by other local stakeholders for advice on a variety of legal, risk and compliance matters.  Your ability to work in partnership with your global colleagues in the  Legal & Policy team will be key to your success in managing those.

Essential Skills & Requirements:

  • Legally qualified in Germany with ideally 4-5 years experience.

  • Expertise in sales and marketing law gained either in private practice or in an in-house role in a similar sector to CN, including a thorough knowledge of applicable marketing codes and best practice;

  • Expertise in commercial law, including an awareness of emerging trends, regulation and best practice in offline and online advertising, social media and Influencers.

  • Fluent English skills and experience delivering legal services in a multinational corporation;

  • Experience in Corporate law and regulatory compliance;

  • Ability to present legal advice in a pragmatic, problem solving and commercial fashion and be known as a true ‘enabler’ to the businesses requests;

  • Confident, self starter who welcomes the opportunity presented by being the first holder of this role;

  • Experience in stakeholder relationship handling and embedding new processes;

  • Positive “can do” attitude and willingness to work flexibly and as a partner to the global Legal & Policy team;

  • Experience of managing compliance and ethical matters and willingness to show integrity and good professional judgement on behalf of a global company.
