Job Purpose (Job Summary):
Under minimal/general supervision, leads other database administrators technically in the maintenance, design and implementation of database management systems and operating systems for assigned clients. Makes assignments to and assists other database administrators as necessary to manage or co-manage a project, troubleshooting, and providing a solution to the day to day issues. This includes recommending and installing hardware, gateways, replication, and other software for databases. More focused towards Service Deliver and identifying the right metrics for the team success with keeping customer experience as prime objective.


Key Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Coordinates or assists in the coordination of assigned projects for the maintenance, development and implementations of database management systems and operating systems in assigned areas
  • Uses superior customer service skills to ensure systems meet the needs of the client.
  • Creates run projects schedules and prioritizes/assigns work to Database Administration Associates.
  • Monitors project progress to ensure that the implementations of new systems are both timely and cost effective.
  • Reports project progress to department and client management as needed to ensure appropriate levels of support to meet project goals.
  • Prepares appropriate technical design specifications as needed to execute projects with the help of Engineering and act as a SME to transition the work from Engineering to Run.
  • Prepares programs and systems as necessary to support assigned project and Run tasks.
  • Works with IT Services management in the development of plans development of projects.
  • Ensures that the appropriate documentation of database operational procedures from both the client and technical perspective is prepared.
  • Recommends hardware and databases software that will provide best environment for databases. This includes gateways to access data on different platforms.
  • Installs and upgrades database and operating systems as appropriate.
  • Monitors the performance and tunes all databases to ensure efficient access. Takes corrective action as needed.
  • Does capacity planning for all servers so that databases do not run out of space unexpectedly.
  • Troubleshoots database problems and provides technical support for databases and operating systems in cooperation with other team members.
  • Participates in Business Recovery ensuring that databases are fully recoverable and applications can access data at recovery site.
  • Responsible for all backup and recovery for database machines.
  • Assists in the development and/or delivery of training to clients on new systems as necessary.
  • Assists in training and evaluating Database Administration Associates.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments and trends in database management systems technology through networking, continuing education and industry/technology publications.

 

Work Experience / Knowledge:

  • Nine to 10 years of professional work experience in an information services environment is required.
  • This must include primary experience on Microsoft SQL server and with Oracle, UNIX and/or Windows Servers and any other opensource databases like (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and NoSQL etc) – Core Technology skills required on SQL Server
  • Must possess a solid understanding of database structures.
  • Also must have skills in database design, information retrieval, access methods/controls, gateway access, security, audit and documentation of guidelines.
  • Must also understand OS, Networks and other Hardware related components and their influence on databases. Knowledge of Solarwinds, OEM, SCOM and SCCM, Oracle Transparent Gateway is preferred.
  • Must have good knowledge on Window OS and Linux OS

  • Must have exceptional ability in diagnosing and solving information system problems while maintaining professionalism and courtesy.
  • Must have the ability to manage projects, establish priorities, meet deadlines and concentrate on detailed information in a fast-paced, demanding work environment.
  • The ability to influence others so that project objectives are met is required.
  • The ability to cooperate in a team environment is critical.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact and communicate with a variety of individuals at all technical levels is required.
  • Ability to handle critical situations effectively by minimizing service interruptions

 

Formal Education: (minimum requirement to perform job duties)

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science is preferred.
  • Must have formal training on Oracle, Microsoft (MS) SQL Server, and other open source Databases like PostGreSQL, MongoDB etc

 

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment with little exposure to noise, dust and temperatures.
  • The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects of up to 10 pounds is also necessary.
  • Normally works a regular schedule of hours, however hours may vary depending upon the project or assignment or operational requirements.
  • Hours may include evenings and/or weekends and may include 24 hours on call support by pager and/or cell phone.
