Office Planning & Research Team is Hiring  

We're looking for experienced User Researchers to join our team and help us shape the future of Microsoft’s Modern Workplace offerings. The charter of the Planning & Research team is to influence product strategy to improve the way users experience, and feel about, Office and Microsoft 365. We work in partnership with product and program managers, designers, engineers, and developers - transforming the experience for our users while being careful stewards of a successful business.    

In this team/role, you will:  

  • Inform an engineering roadmap using customer data (qualitative and quantitative). Key to this accountability will be identifying needs, gaps and customer pain points, as well as potential customer delighters. 
  • Create a holistic, relevant, impactful research plan(s) that provides the broad market views and deep customer insights needed to define Office and M365 journeys/customer scenarios. 
  • Collaborate with PM, Design and others in the framing and scoping phases of the product development lifecycle. Represent the voice of the customer, contribute context and relevant research (foundational and insights resulting from in-stride efforts) 
  • Collaborate with data scientists to derive insights from telemetry, funnel and other quantitative data, complementing other research that you will conduct on your own or in partnership with other researchers.

  • You will plan, execute, and analyze research (qualitative and quantitative) for multiple experiences across a user journey 
  • Your approaches will be increasingly broad and holistic, and you will find yourself deriving insights from multiple sources of data  
  • You will be able to adapt traditional techniques and even generate new research approaches when appropriate 

Balance business motivations and end-user value 

  • You are eager to learn and understand our customer audiences, their behaviors, context(s) and motivations – across all phases of the customer lifecycle and user journey 
  • Can demonstrate strong empathy for the users while balancing the vision and constraints of Microsoft stakeholders 

Desire to work in-stride with other people:  PMs, developers, designers, other researchers, marketers   

  • Really, you must love this part of the job.  The lines between this role and others are often unclear and you must be comfortable with contributing, engaging others despite the ambiguity  
  • Be ready to win together. This team has intentionally designed a structure where we work together. If feedback in prior roles has been to work on your collaboration techniques, you will likely struggle in this role 

 

Entrepreneurial spirit with dirty hands 

  • You will need practical and real-world problem-solving skills, as this team moves fast, and your role will be to help unblock barriers, build and go-to-market 
  • You are customer driven, have a strong sense of purpose and are highly motivated by curiosity 
  • Be proactive, establish your voice within your domain and actively identify opportunities for research to aid in improving outcomes throughout the product development lifecycle  

 

Other Requirements: 

  • 7+ years of hands-on research with demonstrated skill in collecting and analyzing human behavioral data to improve product plans and UX in a technology industry setting 
  • Either an MA/MS in human factors, psychology, market research or related field, or a BA/BS in one of these fields with industry experience 
  • Domain/work experience as an IT professional and/or domain expertise is a strong differentiator for candidates

Drive Impact and Change.  We often need to rally people around a set of outcomes and keep them moving toward the right accountability milestones.  The Planning & Research team needs someone who can work across the org using what we learn/ know to get to consensus on a strategy, make progress, have impact. Building on the work of others and contributing to the work of others are key to the impact we aspire to deliver.  

Embody the New Way of Working.  For both how research is conducted and the way the product works, we need someone who questions the current “way of doing”.  We need innovative thinking, problem solving techniques that are fresh and creative while keeping a focus on the goal.
