Senior Engineering Manager - Data Engineering

We're seeking a Sr. Engineering Manager to lead a Data Engineering team located in Gurgaon. As part of larger Data Technology group, the new unit will work directly with Data Product, Data Platform and others Technology teams placed across India and US locations. This role is a fantastic opportunity to help improve existing data product and shape new data solutions, not only for our Loyalty program but also for all internal functions. You will make the role successful by applying your engineering, data, analytics, and communication background. What you'll do:

  • Build a high performing multi-functional team of data engineers, working across the new data-platform, traditional and modern data warehouse environment
  • You will own the technology direction and standards for data engineering
  • You will define and communicate high engineering standards and development practices, ensuring design and architecture consistency
  • Work closely with the Data Product team on proof of concepts, requirements breakdown, and roadmap planning
  • Apply the right engineering practices when managing a significant amount of data in real-time and batch
  • You will design data models for fast performance data queries and ETLs
  • Promote collaboration and guide the execution of entire data engineering initiatives or components of larger projects from start to finish
  • Seek opportunities to bring advanced analytical techniques and solutions to the data space
  • Architect and design solutions, ensuring clear documentation, and a high level of communication
  • You'll communicate concise information at all levels of the organization
  • Formulate new and creative ways of building data relationships in a highly matrixed systems landscape
  • You promote excellence and forward-thinking engineering, using technical writing to expose your team to a broader technical population inside and outside Expedia
  • Set up the team through hiring and people growth while balancing your ownership workload trough delegation, while defining and reviewing individual and team goals (OKRs)
  • You act as a servant leader, listen, influencing while bringing recognition to the group
  • You lead on 'what' and 'how' and strive to take the best out of the people that work with you

Who you are:

  • You are a leader in data-warehouse, big-data, and software development environments
  • You have proven record of people management, coaching, and mentoring
  • You have demonstrated a good record of managing data at scale
  • You're hands-on coding with significant experience in one or more key software languages (e.g., Python, Scala, Java)
  • You know dimensional modelling concepts and other efficient data representations for optimizing SQL queries
  • You know how to design data-models, normalized, and un-normalized data structures for fast query performance
  • Proven background in a variety of data technologies, such as Teradata, Hadoop, Spark, HBase, Hive, Presto, and/or ETL frameworks
  • You deeply understand SQL and all its facets but also have experience working with traditional (e.g., Teradata) or cloud-based data-warehouse (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake)
  • You develop elegant SQL queries while breaking down complexity and identifying modular parts
  • You know cloud infrastructures automation tools such as CloudFormation and Docker
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills when working with both business and technical teams
  • Shown rigor in high code quality, automated testing, and engineering principles
  • You know AWS services and architecture experience demonstrated by the use of native cloud solutions (e.g., S3, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, Lambda, and Containers)
  • Strong analytical/business modelling skills with the ability to convert raw data into actionable reporting and scalable data architectures
  • You have experience with agile development methodologies including Scrum and Kanban, and you'll thrive working in an agile environment
