Condé Nast is seeking a passionate, forward thinking Engineering Director to lead a group of our product engineering teams working on The New Yorker websites and mobile applications. Your teams are truly global, spanning the United States, United Kingdom, and India, and will be led by engineering managers and tech leads who will report into you. You will be responsible for leading them as well as driving forward engineering and brand initiatives focused on building a thriving subscription and membership business for Condé Nast, in close partnership with the VP of Product for the New Yorker. We are working on building a great engineering team and culture here and are looking for people who can help lead us forward.

During the current period of Covid related lock-downs, this will start as a remote position, but transition to onsite in New York City when the office reopens.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a global group of 3 engineering teams, consisting of 3 to 6 direct engineering team members each
  • Drive strategy and execution for our subscriptions and memberships initiatives
  • Interface with Editors and Product Leads
  • Some degree of hands on engineering expected, ability to review code from team members and contribute to active developments when necessary
  • Get out there – be a part of the technology community
  • Recruit and nurture new developers
  • Mentor your managers and leads
  • Work with the VP of Engineering and your peers to drive engineering culture and strategy
  • Work with your teams and technical architects on technical direction for new solutions
  • Ensure quality is being upheld in all aspects with the products you oversee - uptime, performance, etc.
  • Help create a community across the engineering team and a culture of openness
  • Ensure standards are being followed, create new standards where appropriate and foster innovation on your teams
  • Be a part of Condé Nast engineering leadership and contribute to building a world-class technology organization

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter; Enthusiastic, creative, and pragmatic
  • Code chops: at least 7 years experience as a developer
  • Have managed managers or teams larger than 10 before
  • Experience managing teams in multiple geographies and time zones a must, experience with development teams located in India a plus
  • First-hand understanding of Agile / XP development methods
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services for cloud infrastructure deployments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience delivering native mobile applications, especially on iOS for iPhone and iPad.
  • Keep up to date with what’s going on in the technology space and like to read code that’s being produced by your teams to stay up with what’s going on
  • Development and management experience with NodeJS, ReactJS
  • Excellent prioritization skills to identify and deliver the most important things first
  • BS/BA degree, CS desired or equivalent work experience
