Instagram brings more than one billion people closer to the people and things they love. The Community Lab sits under the consumer Marketing Insights team, and its objective is to understand & provide insight into the ways in which Instagram’s interest communities, creators and culture bring us closer together, enable self-expression, and enrich our lives.As a Community Lab Insights Strategist, you will be responsible for developing & advancing a rich and holistic framework for interpreting and understanding the ways in which people use and engage with Instagram. This expertise will be built upon the Lab’s sophisticated community-, creator- and media-level data & tooling, but also draw upon market research, news and a deep understanding of online & offline culture. The ultimate output of this framework is to be a thought partner in the development, launch and marketing of new products, features and experiences.Insights Strategists are involved at every stage of the product and/or campaign development and go-to-market life cycle, with methodologies and deliverables taking many different shapes and sizes. As such, success in the Insights Strategist role first requires critical thinking — the ability to quickly understand and frame a problem or question posed by a partner team, and develop a point of view on how to address it. Second, an Insights Strategist must be an effective storyteller, able to query, analyze, synthesize and contextualize data, and then weave in market research and a deep familiarity with broader culture to build a complete and coherent narrative. Day-to-day stakeholders include marketing managers, data analysts, researchers and creative directors, but may also occasionally include product managers, content strategists, and policy managers.

  • Act as primary liaison between the Community Lab and partner teams: product marketing, brand marketing, creative experiences, and market research.
  • Interest communities: Deliver insights on Instagram’s thriving interest communities. Cultivate a deep understanding of a given market or demographic’s interest ecosystem through data, market research, news & online research. Use these insights to set foundational context, and then develop tailored strategies that inform & guide creator- and media-level research.
  • Creators: Deliver insights on Instagram’s vast community of creators, from focused and targeted research for a specific program or initiative, to aggregated behavioral or demographic observations that inform content strategy.
  • Media: Develop models of understanding content trends that inform the development and marketing of new features, products or experiences, marrying data analyses with visual trends identified by the Lab’s Curation Editors.
  • Through rigorous insights methods, ensure market resonance and brand connection for key projects & deliverables.


  • 1+ years experience in Product Marketing, Market Research, Production, Creative Strategy or related fields
  • BA/BS
  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience with operating independently and with a diversity of stakeholders, and tracking and prioritizing multiple work streams simultaneously
  • Experience with monitoring, analyzing, and synthesizing findings for specific audiences
  • Experience developing frameworks & strategy, whereby observations are contextualized and then woven in actionable insights and programs that support partner teams
  • Experience with the needs and challenges of partner teams, looking for efficiencies in workflows & program across team needs, and continually iterate and improve processes and deliverables based on ongoing feedback


  • Knowledge in Instagram, a personal interest in internet communities and culture, and familiarity with and interest in popular culture more broadly
  • An understanding of Instagram's values, vision, and mission, and how it applies to community and manifests across the Product team
  • Background or experience with visual media, e.g. digital publications, creative agencies, etc.
  • Experience working in a data-drive technology environment
