Condé Nast is seeking an experienced passionate engineering leader to oversee our global commercial, data and user platform technologies. The Senior Director, Platform Engineering will be responsible for working closely with product, design and commercial stakeholders to build technologies that drive incremental commercial and consumer revenue in our twelve global markets, while building a strong globally distributed team.

Our mission is to build modern media platforms to serve our omni-channel experiences for our portfolio of global brands such as Vogue, Wired, Vanity Fair, and Glamour which currently reaches over 500 million monthly users. We need your help to create new capabilities, and strengthen our existing ones, so that our brands can reach wider audiences through engaging digital experiences.

Quality, performance, experimentation, and speed of delivery are all principles at the heart of what we do as a Platform Engineering group. We have strong capabilities in areas such as editorial tooling, content delivery, design systems, advertising and commerce that we will continue to improve and grow. Our vision is to additionally invest in areas such as video, subscriptions, membership, and next generation editorial tools.

Teams are encouraged to explore creative ideas to meet the Product vision, backed by rigorous techniques. That’s why we have been investing in baking in experimentation into our platforms through a/b and multivariate testing. Currently we run hundreds of experiments in production every day!

You will be working alongside international colleagues across US, London, and India. We strongly emphasize cross-functional working through partnering directly with Product, Data, Design, UX and Delivery.

About the role:

The Director, Platform engineering - Revenue leads engineering for the main revenue-generating digital platforms: Ad, Paywall, User, and Consumer Marketing Technology. The right candidate is passionate and forward-looking, with a particular interest in e-commerce and how to generate revenue online. You will have accountability for leading our platform engineering teams who are responsible for working on our advertising, paywall, user identity, and commerce systems. The tools and capabilities you will develop will be used by all Conde Nast brands in all markets, and is a very critical part of Conde Nast’s digital transformation. Your teams are truly global, spanning the United States, United Kingdom, and India, and will be led by engineering managers and tech leads who will report into you, or in a matrix fashion in cooperation with platform-focused delivery directors. You will be responsible for leading them as well as driving forward engineering initiatives focused on building user-focused content experiences across the variety of Condé Nast brands, including Vogue and The New Yorker.


  • Manage and lead a global group of multiple engineering teams, consisting of 3 to 6 direct engineering team members each
  • Partner with the VP of Platform Engineering to drive strategy and execution for our Advertising, Paywall, User, and MarTech (commerce) systems.
  • Interface with Platform Product Managers to manage new demand and ongoing enhancement of our platforms
  • Strong degree of hands on engineering expected, ability to review code from team members and contribute to active developments when necessary
  • Get out there – be a part of the technology community
  • Recruit and mentor new developers, managers and leads
  • Ensure global technical excellence, measured in uptime, responsiveness, and flexibility of our services at all levels of our technology stack
  • Partner with the rest of our global technology leadership to build strong globally distributed platform development teams
  • Drive network-wide technology initiatives in partnership with brand engineering and product leadership
  • Work with your teams and technical architects on technical direction for new solutions
  • Help create a community across the engineering team and a culture of openness
  • Ensure standards are being followed, create new standards where appropriate and foster innovation on your teams
  • Be a part of Condé Nast engineering leadership and contribute to building a world-class technology organization

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter; Enthusiastic, creative, and pragmatic and have the ability to drive objectives forward and see projects and initiatives through to completion
  • Code chops: at least 10 years experience as a developer
  • Have managed managers or teams larger than 10 before
  • Experience managing teams in multiple geographies and time zones including experience with development teams located in India
  • First-hand understanding of Agile / XP development methods
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services for cloud infrastructure deployments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Development and management experience with NodeJS, ReactJS, Javascript, Java, Mongodb.
  • Prior experience with e-commerce systems, such as Shopify, Magento, or Hybris
  • Prior experience with managing user identity solutions
  • Excellent prioritization skills to identify and deliver the most important things first
  • Experience with Advertising platforms such as Google Ad Manager preferred
  • You demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
