We are hiring a manager to join the American Express Corporate Affairs and Communications team to work with our Global Cobrand & Lending business. We are looking for a dynamic, creative and detail-oriented communications expert with stellar writing skills. As a skilled writer, the manager should know how to communicate clearly and effectively, without the use of jargon or hyperbole, to capture the curiosity of the reader.

Reporting to a VP, activities broadly include creating comprehensive strategies to effectively communicate with external media, opinion leaders, influencers and colleagues about American Express consumer Cobrand and Lending products and services. Candidate should also have strong media relations skills including understanding of different media outlets, crafting interesting pitches and pitch angles, building relationships with key media and knowing how to sell a story.

We are looking for someone who is organized and can oversee multiple projects at any given time. This person will collaborate with peers, across businesses and should be comfortable working with senior leaders and strategic partners. There is opportunity to grow in this role and beyond.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Writing clearly and effectively
  • Developing strategic plans and creative ideas that promote the Consumer business at American Express, and specifically, the products and services within the Global Cobrand and Lending business
  • Executing proactive media and influencer strategies to further American Express business objectives
  • Writing internal memos, messages, talking points, Q&A, press releases, social posts and capture photo and video content
  • Partnering with social media team to support campaigns on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram
  • Acting as a spokesperson on behalf of the company
  • Providing crisis communications support and counsel for complex business issues, when needed
  • Providing PR counsel and support to senior leadership and strategic partners
  • Collaborating across CA&C to support enterprise-wide communications initiatives
  • Bringing creative ideas to the table 
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5 – 7 years of public relations experience preferred; PR agency experience a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Deep understanding of the changing media landscape and the ongoing news cycle
  • Comfortable working with all levels the organization and proven ability to influence
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and a willingness to take charge and drive results
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Ability to work with and manage PR agencies, including managing and motivating multiple teams and budgets
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple projects with different leaders
  • Ability to prioritize
  • Crisis communications knowledge
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and establish clear priorities quickly
  • Able to deal with confidential information without exception
