Lead Customer Support Engineer

L3 OceanServer develops and builds Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) or Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs)) for commercial and military applications. We have an immediate opening for a Lead Customer Support Engineer.

As a small business unit (about 25 people) within a large public company (>38,000 people), L3 OceanServer functions as an agile, innovative engineering design/build house. Our core engineering functions include complete mechanical and electrical design, and software development. Our Division manufactures and markets the Iver AUV worldwide to a mix of Commercial, Academic, Government and Military/Navy users. We have access to the resources of the greater L3 Technologies Corporation while still providing the daily feel of a small business.


This person will serve in a supervisory capacity with a small team of field engineering personnel that focus primarily on testing production vehicles, R&D; platforms, sensor payloads and development behaviors. The role also requires active participation in developing and implementing instructor-led training programs for customers, and internal training and customer training & engagement will be required.

Daily activities will include supervision of field activities, product development testing, post-mission analysis, and a strong hands-on relationship with existing Iver AUV operators, including active participation in Field Exercises, Operator training and coordinating ongoing technical support.

Specific Duties:
  • Supervise personnel and assets during field activities coordinated from our San Diego facility.
  • Assist in the implementation of of field best practices and safe operating program.
  • Coordinate field testing schedules with customer support team and production team to meet system delivery requirements.
  • Represent L3 OceanServer at domestic and international exercises and demonstrations where UUV assets are deployed to showcase capability and support warfighter mission objectives.
  • Assist in developing AUV product documentation.
  • Assist in developing AUV specifications.
  • Ability to travel (US and International) approximately 25%.
  • Assist in validation of AUV payloads and behaviors.
  • Assist in developing and improving AUV training materials.
  • Develop and verify customer specifications, conduct operator training, and participate as a company representative during demonstrations and field exercises with existing and potential new customers.
  • Interface with customers on behalf of L3 OceanServer Engineering and Management.
  • Provide input and recommendations for Internal Research And Development (IRAD) priorities and support business growth by researching and responding to customer solicitations.
  • Provide operator level maintenance and rudimentary hardware tech support for Iver AUV's at customer site
  • Assist in developing AUV specifications
  • Assist in validation of AUV payloads and behaviors
  • Assist in developing and improving AUV training materials
  • Assist in developing AUV product documentation
  • At least 5 plus years previous field service or military experience with the testing/repair/maintenance of UAV vehicles is required.
  • Bachelor degree with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be a US Citizen and be able to obtain a secret level security clearance.
