We’re the Shared Services team at Zendesk -- we’re a small team of engineers building services and tools that are used across the Zendesk product suite. We spend a lot of time thinking about distributed systems, API/database schema designs, and performance optimization. We love exploring new technology and have sponsored a number of company-wide technical initiatives like Distributed Tracing, gRPC, adopting multi-master replication data stores, etc.
About the Internship
Within the first few weeks, you’ll pair with engineers on the team in order to learn about our current stack and architecture. From there, you can work solo or collaboratively to deliver your own summer internship project. You’ll be whiteboarding for ideas, produce design docs, write some code/tests, instrument metrics, and deploy your own feature to production! Some project ideas include shipping a new gRPC service, develop new features for existing Scala/Ruby libraries, instrument our services with distributed tracing, etc.
You love problem-solving. You are patient with investigating problems and can iterate over multiple solutions in order to arrive at the appropriate fix.You want to gain hands-on experience working with web development (specifically, working with highly performant web services, RPC frameworks, and relational databases).You know or want to learn Ruby and/or Scala.You are authorized to work in the United States.
