The Commercial Software Engineering (CSE) team is a global engineering organization that works side by side with customers to help them tackle their toughest technical problems both in the cloud and on the edge. We meet customers where they are, work in the languages they use, with the open source frameworks they use, on the operating systems they use. We work with enterprises and start-ups across many industries from financial services to Healthcare to manufacturing. Our work covers a broad spectrum of domains including IoT, machine learning, and high scale compute. Our "superpower" is that we work closely with both our customers’ engineering teams and Microsoft’s product engineering teams, developing real-world expertise that we can use to help our customers grow their business and help Microsoft improve our products and services.

 

We are very community focused in our work, with one foot in Microsoft and one foot in the open source communities that we help. We make pull requests on open source projects to add support for Microsoft platforms and/or improve existing implementations. We build frameworks and other tools to make it easier for developers to use Microsoft platforms. We source all the ideas for this work by maintaining very deep connections with these communities and the customers and partners that use them.

Responsibilities
  • Leading, mentoring and coaching a team of 5-6 software development engineers at all levels.
  • Designing and implementing scalable/reliable cloud based systems with high availability, performance and design reuse in mind.
  • Leading design and code reviews.
  • Giving thoughtful feedback, nurturing an inclusive environment, championing engineering fundamentals and providing mentorship for team members to grow
  • Our leads embody the player-coach philosophy! Working hands-on with your team and our customers through design and implementation, setting examples for good engineering practices and coding along the way.
  • Continuously improving our ability to deliver quality solutions through evolving our engineering process and technical capabilities.
  • Developing software and sharing knowledge to make communities, customers and partners successful on Microsoft platforms.
  • Developing deep relationships and exhibiting technical leadership across teams within Microsoft and with open source communities, thereby having a positive impact on Microsoft’s platform business. 
QualificationsRequired qualifications:
  • At least 5+ years of prior direct people management experience managing durable teams
  • At least 3+ years experience designing, implementing and running production systems and/or software

  • Great communication and interpersonal skills, including working across geographical distances.
  • Understanding of cloud computing and experience working with cloud architecture. This experience doesn’t have to be with Microsoft Azure – but having experience with one of the major public cloud platforms is helpful. 
  • Prior experience employing and coaching teams on concepts like CI/CD, test driven development, open source contributions and agile methodologies would be helpful.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering or Mathematics or equivalent experience.

 

The salary range for this role is from $147,500 to $224,500.
