Job Description

Do you love writing microcopy? Are you a stickler for style and happy to debate the merits of the serial comma? Can you wear all the editorial hats – writer, editor, copyeditor, proofreader – while also juggling UX principles, user needs, research findings, stakeholder input, bug fixes, and tight release schedules? We’re looking for a UX Content Designer to help us design, build, and launch an exciting new software solution that will revolutionize the way people work. It’s new territory for us and we’re just getting started, so you’ll be coming in on the ground floor to help us shape a brand-new product experience through words. This is not a marketing, social media, or tech writing gig – it’s 100% content design, UX writing, and product content strategy. If this sounds like the kind of adventure you’re looking for, we want to meet you.

Our content design practice

We’re a tight-knit, nimble team of content designers working on the front lines of the product design and development process. We work closely with our UX design and research counterparts, as well as engineers, product and marketing managers, customer support specialists, localization experts, and others to craft people-focused content at various stages of the product lifecycle. Our audience numbers in the hundreds of millions and includes ordinary end users, subject matter experts, and highly technical IT administrators. Our practice is grounded firmly in the principles of plain language. We follow in-house style but rely on instinct, experience, and creative license when needed. We seize opportunities to delight but scale it back when minimalism is the right call. We meet regularly to share our work, offer feedback, and commiserate about grammar offenses and other writerly stuff.

What you’ll do

  • Design content for buttons, tooltips, settings, navigation, messages, notifications, onboarding flows, and other bits and pieces of the user interface

  • Ensure consistency of voice, tone, phrasing, vocabulary, and general writing style across the content experience

  • Collaborate regularly with a cross-functional product team on designs, product enhancements, bug fixes, and new features

  • Contribute to writing guidelines and a design system

  • Manage multiple projects at a time (of varying scope, timeline, and complexity)

  • Advance a strong editorial point of view, supported by your expertise, industry trends, design rationale, and user research data

Requirements for the job

  • 2+ years of experience writing people-focused copy for mobile, web, or desktop software products

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, UX, HCI, or related field

  • Portfolio of content design and UX writing examples demonstrating your command of the craft

  • Deep knowledge of UX design principles and practices

  • Experience writing and working in an agile product development environment

  • Comfortable explaining writing decisions and articulating UX writing principles for non-writers

  • Near-obsessive attention to detail in wording, grammar, mechanics, layout, and design

  • Outstanding written and verbal English skills

Nice to have

  • Experience testing and validating content with users

  • Experience with localization and accessibility best practices

  • Experience working with teams located in multiple, global time zones
