Sr. UX Design Engineer iOS – Experience Lab

The Sr. UX Design Engineer, similar to creative technologists or design technologists, will work on a multidisciplinary team to design and prototype groundbreaking experiences for our customers across the travel ecosystem. They thrive at pushing the boundaries of what is possible at the intersection of data, design, technology, and human behavior, resulting in new interfaces enabled by our travel platform. 

This individual will blend UX design and engineering expertise into a single progressive subject area and define the standards and solutions for multiple types of technologies and platforms with a strong emphasis on iOS prototyping. You’ll be empowered and challenged to tap the full range of your skills and encouraged to experiment with new technology.  

They will build prototypes or simulated interfaces and experiences so the Experience Lab can get work in the hands of our customers faster to evolve and prove out the design. Throughout the process, the Sr. UX Design Engineer continually communicates findings from all teams' work outward for both internal and external customers through a variety of channels.  

They are leaders in uncovering and publishing new advancements in emerging technology, AI, and customer behavior. 
 

What you’ll do:

  • Develop empathy and insights about customers based on data and insights from research and other customer data sources

  • Conceptual problem-solver that effectively applies human-centered design practices and systemic thinking to solve highly sophisticated design challenges at a platform scale

  • Influences direction for Experience Lab projects by articulating a coherent, technical design point of view 

  • Explores and experiments with emerging technologies and builds simulations or prototypes for innovative experiences for all our customers across the travel ecosystem

  • Collaborate with UX designers, engineers, and product managers across Expedia Group to identify and develop solutions for new user experiences and interactions 

  • Partner with product and design to identity and collect data to drive user research 

  • Demonstrate deep expertise of common interaction design principles and practice, and create appropriate sketches, wireframes, flows, simulations, and prototypes with minimal guidance

  • Continually keeps an eye on what’s next - experiments with new tools and design approaches to help advance the work and organization

  • Advises on technical limitations of software design for products and provide alternative solutions 

  • Acts as a spokesperson and develop prototypes to impact strategy, not just execution 

 

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's Degree or related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience

  • A hard-working and influential individual contributor who leads by example while mentoring junior colleagues 

  • Experienced in communicating with technical leadership, leading vaguely defined projects, and stretching into team leadership 

  • Strong UX Software Engineering experience in at least 2 multi-quarter projects 

  • Experience working in decentralized teams and projects 

  • Expertise with Objective-C, Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit and XCode 

  • Expertise with micro and macro interactions, transitions, animations, and motion behaviors   

  • Strong proficiency with layout and screen flow 

  • Proficiency in designing apps for accessibility 

  • Responsive web experience a plus 

  • Experience guiding integrations and knowledge-sharing across teams 

  • Understands highly sophisticated systems and builds moderately complex systems 

  • Possesses a strong understanding of how team goals fit a business need
