This position will fulfill a Cloud Database Engineer role primarily in project-based engagements with clients. Focus will be on migrating data to the cloud/cloud native services, typically as part of a large migration effort, primarily to or from Microsoft SQL Server.

We've provided assessments, builds, migrations, managed services, and other professional services engagements for hundreds of AWS and Azure customers. We take great pride in delivering solutions which maximize the power and capabilities Azure and AWS have to offer and building environments that are highly resilient, secure, automated, and cost efficient.  You will have a critical role helping us achieve these goals for our clients.

 

What You'll Do:

 

  • Work with customers in database administration and database migration capacities as part of Professional Services engagements, with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server
  • Automation of common database migration tasks
  • Implementation of best-practices configurations for security, availability, visibility, and performance
  • Configuration of database backups via database-native and cloud-native tools
  • Implement and test high-availability and disaster recovery configurations
  • Assess database performance and develop tuning and/or rightsizing plans
  • Assist clients with database load testing
  • Develop and grow internal technical knowledge base on cloud database offerings and best practices, and present ongoing technical training to peers and colleagues.




What We Look For:

 

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience (at the database level) and a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant public cloud experience. 
  • Hands-on experience migrating on-prem databases to the cloud.
  • Expertise in running MS SQL Server both on-prem and on EC2 instances/VMs in a High Availability configuration
  • Familiarity with Identity and Access models, in both on-prem (Active Directory) and the Cloud (AWS IAM, Azure AD)
  • Familiarity with open-source database engines and their implementation in the cloud
  • Familiarity with AWS and Azure managed database offerings, and their advantages and disadvantages over other deployment models.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably Terraform
  • Proficiency with SQL and Database performance tuning techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with common database adjacent services such as AWS S3, Azure Blob storage, AWS Lambda, Azure Automation, etc.
  • Hands-on experience running migration tools, including but not limited to: backup/restore, log shipping/mirroring, Always On Availability Groups, AWS Database Migration Services, Schema Conversion tool, Azure Migrate, Azure Data Migration Assistant.
  • Powershell scripting
  • AWS/Azure CLI 
  • At least one AWS or Azure certification
  • Experience with NoSQL databases – Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB, Cosmos DB

 

Nice-to-have:

  • SQL Server or NoSQL related certifications
  • Experience with one or more security compliance standards (HIPAA/HITRUST, PCI, etc)
