About The Team

The Academic Product team makes up the core of outward-facing user experience of 2U’s product offering and the technology used by faculty and Curriculum & Learning team to plan and assemble both asynchronous and synchronous content.

This is the “face” of 2U insofar as it is the destination for students, faculty, administrators and support users alike to interact with each other, share information, consume content, and perform the necessary operations to complete a degree with a 2U partner. Our goal is to create an enterprise-class course management product suite and world class learning and teaching experience platform that’s scalable and flexible.

We are motivated to build a team where members bring sound computer science fundamentals and a diverse set of skills and experiences to the table. Our team covers the following areas:

UI Excellence:

  • Client-side JavaScript
  • Component-oriented JavaScript frameworks (preferably React)
  • Complex layouts with CSS and HTML
  • Semantic markup and accessibility
  • Scalable CSS architecture
  • Modern browser technologies

Distributed Systems:

  • Distributed systems, including fault tolerant design, event sourcing and other distributed system architectural pattern
  • Container technology like Docker, and familiarity with Swarm/Kubernetes/Mesos
  • Backend programming in multiple languages such as Ruby, Python or Node

Data Insight:

  • Building data driven solutions
  • Data modeling, data access, and data storage techniques
  • Building large-scale batch and real-time data pipelines with data processing frameworks
  • Help drive optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality
  • Collaborate with other software engineers, work closely with the data science team, promote learning and leadership opportunities, and contribute to a growing knowledge base around good data and analytics strategies, patterns and standards

Operational Efficiency:

  • Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, programming languages, distributed systems
  • Developing, deploying, and monitoring services on cloud infrastructure like Amazon
  • Understanding of modern application development and architecture
  • Understanding of DevOps principles such as fail early and often, The Three Ways, small batches, CI/CD

We are looking for full stack engineers with the following:

  • Node.js + Hapi.js and modern JavaScript frameworks (like React and Angular)
  • Ruby on Rails and modern JavaScript frameworks (like React and Angular)
  • Building APIs (like JSON API spec or GraphQL)

Additional skills/experience we like to see include:

  • Software development methodology, like TDD and BDD
  • DevOps skills: Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Helm
  • Software design: Domain Driven Design, Design patterns
  • Data technology: Relational databases (like PostgreSQL, MySQL), Key Value stores (like Redis)
  • AWS services: AWS Lambda, Aurora, Elasticache, CloudFront, SNS, SQS, and other AWS services.
