CIR is looking for a system administrator to provide technical support for internal staff and manage existing infrastructure and internal systems. You will research, diagnose and resolve software and hardware issues and coordinate referrals to appropriate outside service providers when needed. You also will analyze, design, develop, document and test network operations, among other duties.
As a key stakeholder in the security of our work, you will be responsible for conducting security trainings for journalists, keeping up to date on the most recent developments and security practices for journalists, and advising our legal and editorial teams on security questions.
The ideal candidate for this position will have the ability and desire to deal with both high-level IT solutions and coaching and problem solving for the technologically challenged. An interest in and curiosity about investigative reporting is a plus, as our need to stay on top of security and privacy measures and concerns is of utmost importance to our mission and work.
The following experience is desirable for this position:
3+ years working in a support environment that includes a strong working knowledge of Mac OS X, Linux and Windows systems
Knowledge of OS X imaging practices
General knowledge of databases and cloud computing services (AWS)
Solid familiarity with Bash and the Linux/Unix command line
Working knowledge of office infrastructure systems (file servers, web hosts, Wi-Fi, etc.).
Familiarity with Google Admin Tools
Audio/video system support for radio and video production teams
Experience with open source tools (pfSense, OpenVPN, Proxmox, Samba, NFS, etc.).
Qualified candidates will have strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills to successfully interact with staff members in a polite, mature and professional manner. You must be accurate, thorough and have great attention to detail, along with the ability to manage time, prioritize and shift quickly among various responsibilities. You should be fully capable of working independently and be able to lift up to 50 pounds (though there are usually people around who are willing and able help). While we strive for all employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance, there are times when this position must be available for on-call emergency support.
