Job Details
At Elias Sports Bureau, the foremost institution in sports statistics since 1913, we help partners tell the story of sports through data, research, and technology services. We're looking for a Researcher (Night Crew) to join our established and passionate research team.
In this role, you’ll help ensure the accuracy and historical integrity of data across major professional sports. You'll load and cleanse data from recent games, write SQL queries to support our clients’ needs, and contextualize live events within decades of league history.
Our researchers work closely with leagues, media partners, and broadcasters to deliver fast, accurate, and meaningful stats — often under tight deadlines and in high-visibility environments. The team is small, collaborative, and highly tenured, with many researchers having been with Elias for 20+ years. If you’re a sports expert with SQL skills and a passion for precision, this is your chance to help shape the data millions of fans rely on.
This is a remote-friendly position, with evening and weekend availability required.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Load, cleanse, and scrub data from daily games across multiple professional sports.
- Write SQL queries in our historical databases to fulfill client requests and support internal research efforts.
- Place current and in-progress events in historical context to create rich, accurate insights.
- Collaborate with other researchers and client teams to uphold Elias’s data standards.
What We’re Looking For:
- 1–3 years of professional experience in a data- or research-related role (internships count).
- Strong knowledge of SQL, including subqueries, temp tables, joins, aggregation, functions, indexing, and views.
- Broad sports knowledge across major U.S. leagues. Bonus points for college basketball, hockey, golf, and MLS familiarity.
- Clear, concise writing and communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work 8-hour shifts between 5:00pm and 3:00am ET, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Basic working knowledge of Python or R.
- Previous experience in a research or client-facing position.
