Chemical Systems Modeling Technical Specialist
Job details
DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented Chemical Systems Modeling Technical Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for Cummins Inc. in Indianapolis, IN.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Lead smaller-scale projects or take ownership of complex components and systems, driving results in ambiguous technical environments with full accountability to project objectives.
- Execute established and emerging engineering processes independently while actively building deeper product and technology expertise.
- Champion the development, improvement, and standardization of work processes and systems across the functional discipline to enhance quality and efficiency.
- Coordinate and guide the work of technicians and student engineers, supporting knowledge transfer and fostering skill development among less experienced team members.
- Influence technical direction by providing expert support, insight, and guidance to project teams while advancing proficiency in key competency areas.
- Serve as a recognized specialist within your discipline or product area, contributing deep technical expertise that strengthens team performance and decision-making.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Ability to design and execute accelerated aging tests that simulate real‑world chemical exposure conditions—such as thermal cycling, poisoning, and physical masking—to evaluate durability and performance.
- Strong capability in characterizing chemical systems , including measuring physicochemical properties (morphology, redox/acid‑base behavior, solubility, impedance, diffusion, etc.) to diagnose component health and predict performance.
- Proficiency in chemical and electrochemical performance testing , including designing experiments, interpreting transformation and selectivity data, and drawing insights that guide hardware, controls, and computational tool development.
- Experience applying modeling, simulation, and functional analysis tools to predict system, subsystem, and component behavior and drive informed product design decisions.
- Advanced structured problem solving skills , using data‑based methods to identify assignable causes, implement robust corrective actions, and prevent recurrence of chemical or system related failures.
- Expertise in product verification and validation , including developing validation plans, identifying failure modes, managing risk, interpreting analytical/simulation/test results, and documenting recommendations that support product decisions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Licenses, Certifications:
- College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
- Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience:
- Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
- Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred
Additional Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a technical consultant in model development, analysis methodology, and the company's philosophy and processes for component and system modeling across various platform teams in different business units.
- Develop, assess, and enhance various physics-based and AI-driven models for aftertreatment catalysts.
- Implement modeling technologies that directly impact Analysis-Led Design (ALD) for emission solution development programs.
Additional Job Skill Requirements:
- Strong analytical ability in chemical reaction kinetics, catalysis fundamentals, gas dynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, demonstrated by applying these fundamentals to solve real-life engineering problems.
- Engine exhaust aftertreatment chemistry and hardware knowledge.
- Proficiency with various advanced numerical methods and algorithms.
- Prior experience in working with fuel-cell and battery systems is a plus.
- AI/ML skills in catalyst and system modeling are a plus.
- The capability to efficiently apply one or more engineering simulation software and programming languages, including AVL-Cruise M, AVL-FIRE, MATLAB/Simulink, and Python, is desirable.
Education:
- M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with 2+ years of relevant professional work experience.
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with relevant doctoral research work.
