Leads discovery and optimization (LDO) is a diverse group of scientists and engineers, providing critical lead discovery, lead evaluation, and lead profiling data to improve understanding and increase the speed of discovery of new therapeutics.  The Data Science and Advanced Analytics team in LDO will help shape the future of how we advance molecules to the clinic via informative analytical tools and inferential models.  We are seeking a highly motivated and creative senior data scientist to develop innovative models and analytical tools to enable portfolio decisions by addressing key scientific questions. This individual will work closely with bench scientists to develop and implement novel machine learning and analytical tools to address scientific hypotheses.  Join us as we transform the drug discovery process to enable rapid progression of medicines to patients.

Position Responsibilities

  • Formulate hypotheses, set strategies, and develop tools to address scientific questions with LDO datasets using advanced analytics and/or machine learning approaches
  • Champion the evaluation and implementation of next generation machine learning and analytics tools
  • Utilize necessary tools to extract and prepare datasets for downstream consumption in models and analytics 
  • Write and document programming code in one or more languages (e.g. R, Python) to facilitate data preparation / cleaning, model development, and evaluation
  • Create deployable tools to enable customer interaction with datasets and models
  • Collaborate across R&ED data science teams to develop enterprise strategies for machine learning in drug discovery
  • Develop fit for purpose tools to support therapeutic research centers across multiple sites in the network
  • Present analyses and results to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Represent LDO in machine learning and data science forums
  • Participate in evaluation of external collaborations to support cutting edge machine learning tools
  • Act as a mentor to junior staff

Major Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in quantitative sciences/engineering (computer science, mathematics, statistics, or engineering)
  • 6+ years of relevant professional experience with a proven track record in machine learning and data science – experience in drug discovery machine learning is desirable but not required
  • Strong knowledge of one or more scripting programming languages, with a focus on machine learning (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, C/C++)
  • Able to extract information from databases using a variety of software packages (e.g., Oracle SQL developer)
  • Ability to build and maintain databases aligned with enterprise solutions is desirable but not required
  • Experience with data analytics software packages and building customer-facing portals for data and model consumption (e.g., Tableau, Spotfire)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to understand technical business problems and implement solutions
  • Ability to work effectively on matrixed teams to collaboratively solve challenging problems, while also able to work independently with minimal resources
  • Has good interpersonal, communication, writing and organizational skills
  • Ability to summarize technically/analytically complex information for a non-technical audience
