Abstraction Specialist

At Flatiron we are building a disruptive software platform dedicated to oncology that connects cancer centers across the country on a common infrastructure. Our platform aggregates and transforms real-world data at a scale and clinical depth never seen before.

 The process is carried out by our Abstractors - nurses, certified tumor registrars, and research professionals who work in a full or part-time capacity to extract complex clinical insights from EMRs. The Abstraction Specialist is part of a specialized subset of the remote abstraction team and will report to the Clinical Abstraction Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Abstracting clinical data from patient charts using Flatiron’s proprietary system
  • Triaging and responding to abstractor questions
  • Performing patient-level quality assurance on dataset deliverables
  • Helping with feasibility and initial testing of novel data points or new abstraction approaches
  • Assisting with testing of new Patient Manger tools or features.
  • Meeting task and/or review panel targets as determined in consultation with team leaders and management
  • Obtaining and maintaining credentials to abstract on a number of modules, as determined by management
  • Participating in regular team teleconferences and other meetings as required
  • Maintaining a high level of performance, as measured by both efficiency and quality scores
  • Working a minimum of 32 hours/week and submitting a weekly timesheet
  • Traveling to New York City for in-person meetings at least 1-2 times per year 

Requirements

  • At least 6 months experience working as an abstractor for Flatiron Health preferred.
  • Track record of strong abstractor skills with Flatiron Health as demonstrated by consistent abstraction quality and efficiency.  
  • Certified tumor registrar, registered nurse, physician assistant, or equivalent, with significant hands-on experience working in oncology (5+ years).
  • Familiar with all aspects of how cancer is treated, from diagnosis to recovery, and fluent in cancer terminology.
  • High comfort level with technology and familiarity with EMR systems.
  • Demonstrated exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience with data entry, including strong typing skills, preferred.
  • Active nurse/PA license or CTR certification, as applicable.
