The mission of the Operational Risk Governance Group (ORGG) is to drive the operational risk program at American Express in a comprehensive and complete manner to enable growth for the enterprise, while being consistent with expectations and requirements of the Company’s primary regulator, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Through a collaborative partnership with the business, ORGG provides operational risk guidance and oversight through the design, implementation and ongoing management of the Company’s Operational Risk Framework.
The Framework consists of several core components, grouped into pillars, including governance, risk assessment, business and environmental internal control factors, and reporting and monitoring.
The main areas of responsibility for the Operational Risk Manager/Sr Manager, Governance, are to support the overall management and execution of operational risk governance activities throughout the company. This includes assessing and aggregating Operational Risk across the enterprise through evaluation of the Operational Risk Framework and the supporting programs. Additionally, this role evaluates operational risk reporting (metrics, loss events, findings, remediation plans, etc.), internal and external research, including leveraging peer benchmarks to identify current and emerging risk issues
Specifically, this role will:
Lead efforts to integrate risk assessment further into operational decision-making, partnering with other departments as appropriate, such as Compliance, Audit & Operational Risk Pillars.
Enable the governance activities of the Company’s operational risk framework across AXP by collaborating closely with ORGG colleagues, business unit and staff groups, and global bank entity operational risk teams.
Possess a solid understanding of regulatory requirements for operational risk management on a global basis.
Provide thought leadership and support to ORGG and business peers to analyze and evaluate operational risk governance structures, processes and data to support various country-specific regulatory requirements.
Provide technical support and expertise from an enterprise level to optimize efficiencies across global bank entities.
The individual needs to be able to prioritize multiple project streams and tasks and should be self-motivated and able to thrive in an environment with ad-hoc activities. They should also have the ability to work collaboratively with ORGG colleagues and the business units in executing multiple operational risk initiatives simultaneously.
8+ years’ experience in operational risk management, internal control within the Banking or financial services industries.
Strong presentation skills, particularly in the development of compelling and insightful materials.
Strong writing ability and the ability to translate complex regulatory expectations into cohesive, structured policy documents.
Strong financial and operational knowledge and the ability to present interpretations in a clear manner to senior management.
Strong relationship management skills and the ability to work effectively with operational risk colleagues, business area points of contact and leaders.
Strong communication skills with the ability to convey strategic insight and thought leadership in identifying emerging operational risk issues.
Independent judgment with strong analytical and risk assessment skills
Strong team player.
Ability to incorporate and understand mass information from a variety of sources to recommend a course of action
Ability to efficiently and effectively drive projects to completion.
Proficiency in Powerpoint, Excel and Word
BA or BS degree (preferred in Accounting, Finance or Business, but other disciplines not ruled out).
Ability to travel.
