Crowd Favorite is searching for a full-stack developer to join our engineering team, helping to build digital solutions of all sizes and levels of complexity. Many of these projects involve WordPress, some use Laravel, others are heavy on JavaScript. Most are complex projects containing custom integrations between multiple components.

The ideal candidate is someone who has at least two years of custom development for WordPress sites, development and maintenance support, and customer service experience. The candidate must also be versatile, calm under pressure, genial, and passionate about troubleshooting issues with clients’ websites and coming up with creative and robust solutions.

More about who we are looking for

We hope that you have at least 2-3 years of relevant agency work experience as a fullstack developer, backend developer, or front-end dev with solid PHP or JavaScript experience, that you have developed for and are very familiar with WordPress from previous work.

We will expect you to demonstrate experience from past work that covers relevant technologies. This is a development position, so we will always want to see code. We anticipate you will have more than a couple of examples of code you developed and will take us through it, showing how it is well-structured and scalable.

What else do you know? Where are you with headless or decoupled sites? Custom API integrations? Serverless or ML/AI integrations? Talk to us, we'd love to know more about what you can do and what you spend your free time digging into.

You are someone who stays current on the latest technologies. Tech always changes, especially in the Open Source world, so we keep learning.

You have experience with Agile project management, especially story breakdown and estimation. A key part of this job is writing. How do you approach a task? How do you break it down? What assumptions are you making? Clear communication is key and we're talking about more than doc blocks.

We expect that you speak and write English fluently, as many of your colleagues will have another native language than yourself. The majority of clients and technology as a whole is still English language-centric.

The right candidate is someone who is approachable, responsible, caring, and communicative. In our distributed structure, these are must-have qualities.

We believe that we succeed when we work together rather than alone – and this is something we look for you to believe, too.

You should be confident enough to admit when you make a mistake or lack the skills needed for a specific task. This is ok, since we are always learning, this situation should be seen as an opportunity to learn and improve yourself.

You’ve read about the type of person we are looking for, now here are some of the skills and technical experience necessary to work with our development teams.

  • Able to communicate and collaborate with other developers, designers, and stakeholders in a distributed team
  • Familiar with and comfortable working in an agency environment
  • Can write clean, elegant code that follows a consistent structure, meets established standards, and contains tests
  • Knows Git and adheres to a workflow, including continuous integration and deployment
  • Believes Web Standards and Accessibility are essential to the success of any site
  • Understands CSS well, including SCSS, build tools, and modern approaches
  • Understands front-end templating, especially React and Next.js
  • Familiar with WordPress development, including custom plugins, custom table structures, and back-end tuning
  • Has worked with Laravel, including building for scale and taking a microservices approach for applications
  • Has experience building integrations with application APIs
  • Has experience architecting a de-coupled headless application or website using GraphQL, React, Next.js, Gatsby, etc.
  • Can parse and understand MySQL queries and rewrite them as necessary for performance
  • Knows their way around a server—basic web server configuration, cron management, package management (apt or similar), and basic command line familiarity
  • Has an understanding of virtualization and experience with some flavor of virtual environments such as Docker or Vagrant

This is a development position, so code is involved

Be ready to review some examples of effective solutions that you created. A link to a Git repo or Bitbucket repo gives us something to look at together.

Be ready to discuss them, to talk about them. Walk us through your thought processes. What worked, what didn’t work, etc.

Be ready to talk about how long it took to create the solutions. How off was the time it took from the original estimate? Did you give input on the estimate, or was it decided by others and simply imparted to you?

Crowd Favorite is committed to building an inclusive experience for all our employees. Regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or if you’re parenting those future problem solvers, we firmly believe our work is at its best when everyone feels free to be who they are.
