Job Description

GQ.com is looking for a sharp, self-motivated newsletter editor to deepen our engagement with our most loyal audience and enhance the editorial ambition of our portfolio of newsletter products. The ideal candidate will have proven experience growing an email newsletter program as measured by an increase in subscribers; an increase in newsletter-driven traffic to the website; and an increase in revenue tied to a newsletter product. They will also understand how to create smart segmentation and acquisition strategies, how to write compelling headlines and marketing copy, and how to report on success using existing email platforms. Experience in commerce-driven newsletters is a plus, though not required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with top editors to achieve editorial excellence across our newsletter products, with a focus on voice, originality, accuracy, and humor. The right candidate will also know how to incorporate strong visuals—illustration, graphic design, and photography—into our newsletters, and will have sharp ideas about how to make them more engaging to our readers.
  • Oversee the creation and curation of multiple newsletter products a day.
  • Test content, subject lines, and other variables to optimize results.
  • Master the site’s web analytics and GQ’s existing email acquisition tools, and excel at identifying opportunities for growth based on data and industry trends.
  • Coordinate effective promotion of subscriber acquisition through social media strategy, on-site placement, and partner relationships.
  • Conceive and execute creative newsletter offerings during key tentpole editorial moments, around key events (the NBA Playoffs, GQ’s Men of the Year, etc.) that are popular with readers and align with the site’s business goals. The right candidate will also have familiarity with email courses and challenges, and will understand how they work to bring readers into the top of the funnel.
  • Manage GQ’s onboarding flows, subscriber lists, and inbox placement.
  • Report on email performance and insights to drive growth on a weekly & monthly basis.
  • Embrace innovation and constantly look for new ways to present stories to GQ readers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years managing email newsletters or similar digital products, ideally for a major media company.
  • Experience with testing subject lines, content, and other calls to action and developing newsletter subscriber acquisition campaigns.
  • Familiarity with web analytics, including newsletter analytics.
  • Experience working closely and collaboratively with editorial, advertising, engineering, video and design teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-directed work style, and polished communication skills.
  • The ideal candidate will be fascinated by current events, pop culture, sports, men’s style, and be very familiar with the coverage that regularly appears on GQ.com.
