Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

The Laser Services Group (LSG) is responsible for bringing laser processes to the Manufacturing Floor. We develop laser equipment, fixtures, and processes that optimize and streamline the manufacturing process of instruments and accessories. The engineer in this position will play a key role on the Equipment Engineering team to enable the manufacture of new surgical robotic instruments and accessories. This engineer will develop, specify, and implement the equipment, controls, and fixturing for laser processes. The position will require close collaboration with the NPI engineers, NPD engineers, laser welding equipment suppliers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and quality engineers to implement reliable laser welding equipment and processes.

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience with custom automated equipment, preferably laser welding equipment, from design and/or supplier specification, through fabrication, to sustained production use, and will have demonstrated proficiency in the SW integration of electromechanical components, systems, and associated software.

  • Development of Software, installation and troubleshooting or automated laser welding systems.

  • Identify and develop manufacturing and test processes.

  • Drive continuous improvement projects in the test and equipment space to increase manufacturing yields, improve test coverage, diagnostic capability, productivity, and error proofing.

  • Work with engineering teams to develop new software from specification through implementation on our production lines.

  • Perform equipment demos of Test and Mfg equipment and tooling related to new product launches.

  • Develop reports and dashboards to statistically analyze test measurements and optimize pass/fail criteria.

  • Help determine the root cause of equipment and system test failures with the ability to deep dive into software issues and data analysis.

  • Execute software verification/validation activities to qualify changes to test processes or test specifications.

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

Required:

  • Candidate must be of high character and energy with focused attention to detail.
  • Engineering degree and 8+ years of PLC programming experience
  • Experience in PLC programming and/or Data Acquisition tools.
  • Experience with HMI SW such as Wonderware or equivalent.
  • Processing knowledge of Laser Welding, Marking and Cutting is a plus.
  • Experience specifying, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing production grade, automated test fixtures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, electronics, and standard software applications.
  • "Self-starter" attitude and comfort in a hands-on environment, where you can demonstrate an ability to work with other engineers, technicians, and contract manufacturers.
  • Troubleshooting mindset
  • An ability to systematically and effectively break down a system or process into subparts to identify failures and troubleshoot to component level.
  • Excellent documentation skills and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing across all levels of the organization.
  • A real excitement to learn and get to the bottom of problems.

Preferred:

  • Degree in EE, SW or mechatronics
  • Cognex vision system programming knowledge
  • Experience with documentation and production control systems: Agile, SAP.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and optimizing automated welding systems.
  • Medical device experience
  • Experience in test engineering, and/or in a medical device company or other regulated business.
