Beyond Boundaries: UK & Europe Diversity Summit

“I would have loved seeing an openly gay explorer on TV going on wildlife adventures when I was younger,” says wildlife filmmaker and field biologist Dan O’Neill. Now, young LGBTQIA+ audiences can see exactly that as Dan hosts a brand new 5-part series ‘Giants’ produced by Off The Fence for Curiosity Stream. The series circles the globe on 5 epic expeditions to find the biggest beasts to have walked the planet. ‘Giants’ will be the first time in history, an openly LGBT wildlife presenter will have hosted a series for a major network. We are thrilled to sit down with Dan to discuss his journey, expeditions and his focus on big cats!

Dan O'Neill (He/Him)

Dan O'Neill is a wildlife filmmaker and field biologist, specialising in remote and challenging environments. He has organised numerous expeditions in search of rare animals from the pristine jungles of the northern Amazon and Mayan temple ruins of the Yucatan, to the frozen peaks of Central Asia. He is regularly involved in field studies, primarily working as an expedition leader and technician. He has camera-trapped for jaguars and other large mammals across the Neotropics from Guyana to Mexico and assisted the Snow Leopard Trust in Central Asia.

Dan is a graduate of the prestigious MA Wildlife Filmmaking program from the BBC Natural History Unit. He regularly produces independent conservation & expedition films and is a creator for Sony Pro Filmmaking.

Dan’s brand new 5-part series ‘Giants’ produced by Off The Fence for Curiosity Stream, premiered in May 2023. The series circles the globe on 5 epic expeditions to find the biggest beasts to have walked the planet. ’Giants’ will be the first time in history, an openly LGBT wildlife presenter will have hosted a series for a major network.
