In this talk with former enlisted personnel turned Workiva employees, you’ll find out what to expect in your civilian transition (which may differ from commissioned officers), how to market yourself for civilian jobs and internships, and how to approach any additional education plans you may have.

Kelsey Mueller-Spude joined the United States Army in 2012 as a musician, performing on french horn and vocals. She was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and provided a variety of musical support for military ceremonies and community outreach programs. After 4 years, she separated from the Army and moved to Ames, Iowa to complete her Bachelor of Science in Accounting at Iowa State University while her husband continued his service as an Army recruiter. During this time, she joined Workiva as a Professional Services Manager. Her role provides accounting, software, and financial reporting expertise for numerous public companies utilizing the Workiva platform. She serves as the Collaboration Pillar Leader for the Workiva Veterans BERG (Business Employee Resource Group).

Mike Cooper

Mike Cooper joined the United States Navy in 2015 as a Submarine Navigation Electronics Technician. He was stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam aboard the USS Asheville in support of the ships overhaul and later served as an Operations Supervisor for Naval Submarine Support Command. Upon separation from the Navy, he enrolled at Iowa State University to study Management Information Systems. During this time, he began at Workiva as a Marketing Analytics Intern. He is now a SaaS Operations Engineer supporting implementation, configuration, and management of over 300 SaaS systems for 2700+ employees. He serves as the Community Pillar Leader for Workivas Veterans BERG.

Hunter Canning is a New York based actor, puppeteer, producer and photographer. A conscience citizen of the world, his ethos is bringing people together through all the facets of his life. Be it producing live performance downtown, creating corporate recruitment content or photographing portraiture, red carpets and live events; Hunter has a passion for bringing people together to foster growth, kindness and a true understanding of each other.

Raised in the outer canyons of Los Angeles, Hunter has been a professional actor in New York for the past decade. Notable credits include Broadway’s War Horse (Lincoln Center), Blue Bloods (CBS), The Baker & The Beauty (ABC) and Ray Donovan (Showtime). A career that has seen dizzying heights, all the while remaining with his two feet on the ground.
