Team Introduction:

We are the Analytics Platform organization at Expedia Group, building and
operating the advanced analytics tools that power decision-making across our
family of travel brands. Our team provides the core engines that analysts, data
scientists, and engineers rely on every day to understand traveler behavior,
optimize experiences, and drive the company’s strategy.
As a Software Development Engineer III, you will join a team that:
 Owns and operates Databricks as a first-class compute and data
engineering platform for large-scale ETL, machine learning, and advanced
analytics workloads.
 Runs Trino/Starburst as a critical query layer, enabling interactive analytics
over diverse data sources with strong SLIs/SLOs and a focus on reliability
and performance.
 Provides JupyterHub and ShinyProxy as self-service environments for
experimentation, data exploration, and building lightweight analytical
applications for stakeholders across Expedia.
 Partners closely with product, BI, and data science teams to design and
evolve the end-to-end analytics ecosystem - from data ingestion and
governance to query engines, notebooks, and visualization tools.
 Solves real platform engineering problems: multi-tenant performance, cost
optimization, capacity planning, observability, automation, and security at
global scale.
We work as a high-ownership, engineering-driven team: we build platforms that
we also run in production, we measure ourselves on reliability and customer
satisfaction, and we continuously improve the developer experience for
thousands of internal users

Role Summary

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain highly reliable, scalable, and secure services and applications, including robust API design, low-level system design (LLD), and data modeling to support complex business use cases across multiple domains.

  • Own end-to-end delivery of critical features and services from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing operational support, ensuring high availability and performance in production.

  • Analyze, decompose, and solve complex technical problems, making high-quality engineering decisions, defining clear technical strategies, and driving standard methodologies across services and systems.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners (engineering, product, program, and operations) to translate business requirements into technical designs, set clear expectations, and align on milestones and success criteria.

  • Champion engineering excellence by improving code quality, test coverage, automation, observability, and operational readiness, and by mentoring other engineers through code reviews, design guidance, and knowledge sharing.

  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products in a pragmatic, production-focused manner.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience.

  • Proven ability to own technical solutions for one or more services or subsystems, including system design (LLD), API design, data modeling, and integration patterns across multiple services or domains.

  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language and associated ecosystem, with solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented or functional design, and engineering best practices (testing, code review, continuous integration, and deployment).

  • Hands-on experience building and operating production services at scale, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and performance optimization within a cloud-based or distributed environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience leading the end-to-end technical design of complex, distributed, or high-throughput systems, including defining service boundaries, data contracts, and scaling strategies across multiple domains.

  • Experience designing and evolving resilient APIs and data models that support backward compatibility, high availability, and efficient data access patterns, along with strong attention to reliability, security, and observability.

  • Proven ability to drive technical direction, influence architecture across multiple teams or services, and mentor other engineers in system design (LLD), API design, data modeling, and operational excellence.

  • Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products, including safely integrating and operating AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve customer or business outcomes in production.

  • Experience applying data-driven decision making to engineering problems, such as using metrics, experimentation, or analytics to validate designs and optimizations, and continuously improving systems based on measurable results.
