As a Staff Accountant within Zillow Group’s Accounting team within the Closing & Consolidation function, you'll help advance the accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of Zillow’s financial reporting. This team delivers timely, reliable financial information for leadership and stakeholders while driving initiatives such as close optimization, automation, and accounting for regulated entities. You’ll work alongside experienced team members in an environment focused on learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

About the role

This is an excellent opportunity to grow your career as a Staff Accountant. In this role, you’ll support core accounting processes and gain hands-on experience with the monthly close and financial reporting. You’ll also contribute to key initiatives focused on close optimization and accounting in regulated environments, helping improve how Zillow scales its financial operations. You’ll build foundational accounting skills, partner with team members across the business, and contribute to processes that scale with Zillow’s growth.

You Will Get To:

  • Support the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including preparing journal entries and account reconciliations

  • Assist in maintaining accurate financial records within the general ledger and perform account analysis to investigate variances with guidance from senior team members

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to gather information and help resolve discrepancies

  • Assist in preparing financial reports and supporting schedules, including deliverables commonly used in audit and review processes

  • Support compensation-related accounting activities for the accounting organization, including payroll-related journal entries and accruals, with guidance from senior team members

  • Help maintain documentation and support internal controls and audit requirements, including work related to regulated entities

  • Contribute to close optimization efforts, including identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, standardize processes, and strengthen controls

  • Assist with accounting tasks related to international subsidiaries and foreign currency transactions, and participate in ad hoc projects and other accounting tasks as needed

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $70,500.00 - $112,500.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations. In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont the standard base pay range for this role is $66,900.00 - $106,900.00 annually. The base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

  • 2–3 years of relevant accounting experience (public accounting and/or industry; internships may supplement but not replace core experience)

  • Basic understanding of GAAP accounting principles

  • Proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets, including VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, filters, and core formulas to organize and analyze data

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Ability to follow established processes while applying sound judgment

  • Demonstrated initiative and comfort working through ambiguous problems—gathering context, proposing options, and then partnering with your manager rather than relying solely on step-by-step direction

  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn and grow in a team environment

  • Openness to using modern tools (e.g., AI or automation features in spreadsheets and financial systems) to improve efficiency and communication

  • Comfortable working Pacific Time–aligned hours during month-end and quarter-end close, including staying past your local 5pm when needed to meet close deadlines

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with accounting systems or ERP tools (e.g., Workday Financials, Oracle, SAP, NetSuite)

  • Exposure to month-end close, audit support, internal controls, regulated environments, and/or international entities and foreign currency

  • Progress toward CPA or interest in pursuing CPA
