Skills and Competencies

  • Expertise with the government subsector, including key challenges such as related to risk management, regulatory environments, and procurement processes, including key players, market trends, and competitive landscape, is required.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in business development, market intelligence, product and/or go-to-market strategy in the Defense and Intelligence subsegment.  Preference for data and software background but complex professional services is relevant
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and generate actionable insights.
  • Ability to think strategically and translate market demand signals into actionable business strategies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
  • TS Clearance preferred
  • Basic understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning how AI tools can be used to improve processes and drive efficiency. Interest in exploring AI systems and a willingness to develop awareness of responsible AI practices, including risk management and ethical use.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Senior level experience operating at the intersection of intelligence, national security, and commercial strategy, with demonstrated credibility across joint and combined defense environments, including United States services, NATO allies, and Indo-Pacific partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in Information Warfare or information-centric mission areas, including intelligence, information operations, cyber, or decision-advantage functions, and the ability to translate those perspectives into strategy and executive-level insight.
  • First-hand experience as both a consumer and producer of intelligence across the intelligence cycle.
  • Demonstrated experience operating across defense, intelligence, regulatory, and commercial stakeholders to design and execute strategies that align mission requirements with commercial and market realities.
  • Demonstrated experience executing international business development and go-to-market activities in prior roles, providing practical insight into how Defense-adjacent and defense capabilities scale into allied and partner markets.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting sensitive international security programs in joint, interagency, or national laboratory environments, including the ability to translate complex threat, nonproliferation, or strategic-risk challenges into actionable strategies.
  • Proven experience engaging foreign military, security, or government stakeholders in regions such as North Africa, the Middle East, Europe, or the Indo-Pacific in support of international security or defense-related initiatives.
  • Management consulting or strategy advisory experience supporting the Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, or equivalent national-level clients.
  • Experience providing international trade, export control, or security cooperation advisory support, including work with think tanks or policy institutions focused on global trade and security.
  • Demonstrated credibility briefing Flag Officers, General Officers, Senior Executive Service leaders, or equivalent executives.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, particularly in producing executive-ready strategic products.
  • This role is intentionally designed for a senior practitioner with deep intelligence, strategy, and international business experience, and exposure to trade-security.

Preferred Experience & Capabilities

  • Experience operating in multilingual and cross-cultural environments in support of international government, defense, or commercial engagements.
  • Foreign language capability supporting international business development, security cooperation, or partner engagement.
  • Regional familiarity with allied or partner-nation markets in Europe, the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, or Africa.
  • Advanced professional military education or equivalent executive-level training in joint, combined, or information-centric operations.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Data Science, Engineering or a related field. A Master's degree or MBA is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced professional to serve as an Industry Practice Lead (IPL) in Defense & Intelligence. In this role, you will be responsible for establishing credibility and confidence in Moody’s products with prospective clients through sales activities, thought leadership, and industry engagement. You will serve as the definitive “voice of the customer” for Moody’s ensuring our solutions, data, and analytics are relevant, differentiated, and aligned to mission‑critical government decision‑making. You will also work with our internal partners to define the Moody’s value proposition, facilitate go-to-market activities such as internal training, and support product development.

The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge and insight into defense customers’ buying patterns, preferences, and acquisition strategies relating to data, analytics, software, and related solutions for security, defense, and intelligence globally. Practitioners from Industry who have purchased, consumed or otherwise used data, analytical tools, and platforms to support this mission are also viable candidates.

The ideal candidate serves as a strategic, market-facing advisor to senior leadership within Moody’s Government Commercial Segment. The role supports Moody’s engagement across the Defense and broader Intelligence domain, spanning domestic and international government markets with a focus on decision-maker insight, articulating impact, and embedding this knowledge throughout the Moody’s solutions portfolio and workforce. Its purpose is to deliver decision-grade strategy, intelligence-informed market insight, and scalable frameworks that enable sales execution, inform partnership and acquisition strategy, and strengthen senior-level government and industry engagement.

IPL Responsibilities

  • Driving sales and customer engagement: design, build and execute market outreach strategy (with sales, marketing and strategy teams); act as trusted advisor to customers; proactively work with prospective clients, providing thought leadership on best practices and technical assistance as required; use industry best practice to elevate the impact of proposals and proofs of concept.
  • Industry engagement and thought leadership: develop and maintain industry stakeholder relationships; speak at industry events; publish thought leadership; maintain social media engagement.
  • Market feedback for product development: translate emerging market themes and regulatory requirements into product requirements to future proof our solutions; identify valuable white space; build a business case for product development and improvement.
  • Internal Education: conduct training sessions on customer use cases, workflows, and personas, our solution set and emerging trends; serve as an informal coach and expert to sales professionals, customer success teams, and market strategists.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Basic understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning how AI tools can be used to improve processes and drive efficiency. Interest in exploring AI systems and a willingness to develop awareness of responsible AI practices, including risk management and ethical use.
  • Geographic Territory: Americas

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a principal defense and national-security industry advisor, integrating joint, regulatory, and commercial perspectives into a coherent, scalable industry strategy targeted at Enterprise Defense, Military Services and related Intelligence Community buyers
  • Contribute to the articulation and institutionalization of defense and national-security value propositions aligned to national security, economic security, and commercial resilience decision-making.
  • Support the development and sustainment of a scalable Industry Practice supporting U.S., allied, and international defense customers.
  • Provide defense mission insight spanning the Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and maritime operations that can be applied across Combatant Commands (COCOMs) and international markets to inform partnership, alliance, and growth strategies led by senior leadership.
  • Apply information-advantage principles, including intelligence integration, warning, attribution, and decision support, to joint, multi-domain, and defense-relevant use cases.
  • Engage and support sales and business development teams on account strategy, opportunity shaping, and executive engagement across joint, defense, and international government accounts.
  • Operate in close partnership with senior strategy and partnerships leadership by providing joint defense, Information Warfare, and international mission context to inform partnership, alliance, and acquisition decisions.
  • Support Flag Officer / General Officer (FOGO) and Senior Executive Service (SES)-level engagements and produce executive-ready briefs designed to stand alone without reliance on restricted follow-on conversations.

About the team

The Global Sales operating unit is comprised of over 1,000 sales and customer service professionals serving customers across banking, insurance, asset management, corporates, professional services and governments in over 50 countries.

For US-based roles only: the anticipated hiring base salary range for this position is $163,300.00 - $236,800.00, depending on factors such as experience, education, level, skills, and location. This range is based on a full-time position. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for incentive compensation. Moody’s also offers a competitive benefits package, including not but limited to medical, dental, vision, parental leave, paid time off, a 401(k) plan with employee and company contribution opportunities, life, disability, and accident insurance, a discounted employee stock purchase plan, and tuition reimbursement.
