Team Description: The Air Shopping Experience team builds the end‑to‑end air shopping journey, across native and web, that powers flight search, discovery, and booking across Expedia Group brands. We focus on fast, reliable, and intuitive mobile experiences that help travelers find the right flights with confidence, while enabling experimentation and innovation at scale across our apps.
This role sits within the Expedia Product & Technology division as part of the Technology organization, partnering closely with platform, search, recommendations, checkout, identity, and experimentation teams to deliver connected, high‑quality experiences across brands and platforms. You will be based in Gurgaon, collaborating with distributed teams across Expedia Group.

Role Title: Senior Manager, Software Development Engineering (People Manager)

What you’ll do

• Lead and grow high-performing engineering teams delivering scalable, resilient, and secure software solutions that advance Expedia Group’s product and platform strategy.

• Manage people and teams first, not just projects – set clear expectations, define team goals, and drive accountability for delivery, quality, and operational excellence.

• Attract, hire, and onboard diverse engineering talent, building a strong bench of future leaders and critical technical experts.

• Coach, mentor, and develop engineers and managers, providing regular feedback, career guidance, and growth opportunities aligned to individual aspirations and organizational needs.

• Drive delivery across multiple services/domains, ensuring effective execution of roadmaps, strong partnership with Product Management, and predictable outcomes.

• Foster a healthy engineering culture centered on inclusion, psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning.

• Own engineering standards and best practices (architecture, code quality, testing, observability, reliability, performance) across your area and influence these across adjacent teams.

• Partner closely with crossfunctional leaders (Product, Design, Data, Security, Operations, and other P&T teams) to align priorities, manage dependencies, and remove blockers.

• Use data and metrics to run the business of engineering – track and act on signals related to delivery, operational health, quality, and team health.

• Manage budgets and headcount plans in partnership with your leadership, making thoughtful trade-offs between scope, quality, and timelines.

• Champion modern engineering practices and AIdriven tooling (e.g., CI/CD, test automation, observability, AI-assisted development) to improve productivity and quality.

• Influence technical direction and strategy by evaluating build vs. buy decisions, simplification opportunities, and platform investments.

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Typically 9+ years of software development engineering experience, including:

• 3+ years leading people (direct management of engineers and/or managers) with full responsibility for performance management and career development.

• Demonstrated success managing teams delivering complex, distributed systems or large-scale web services.

• Proven experience in:

• Running agile software development processes (Scrum, Kanban, or similar).

• Owning services in production, including operational excellence (availability, reliability, incident management).

• Partnering with Product to shape and deliver roadmaps.

• Strong foundation in system design, APIs, data modeling, and cloud-native architectures (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure).

• Experience building inclusive, engaged teams and navigating difficult people situations (underperformance, conflict, change).

Preferred qualifications

• Experience managing multiple teams or a multi-layer org (e.g., managers and senior ICs) in a global, matrixed organization.

• Background in ecommerce, travel, or large-scale consumer/marketplace platforms.

• Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across org boundaries, aligning multiple teams around shared goals and standards.

• Strong track record of:

• Talent development (promotions, internal mobility, upskilling).

• Change leadership (driving new practices, platforms, or architectural shifts).

• Engineering productivity improvements, including use of automation and AI-assisted tooling.

• Familiarity with secure and compliant software delivery practices and partnering with Security/Privacy to embed controls into engineering workflows.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and represent engineering in senior forums.
