DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Product Engineering Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins location Troy, MI.   

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:    

  • Driving Product Development Excellence : You will lead the planning, execution, and cross-functional coordination of product development activities, ensuring alignment with technical profiles and stakeholder expectations while proactively managing risks.
  • Enhancing Product Reliability : By applying failure mode avoidance techniques, you will identify and mitigate potential failure causes, improving the robustness and dependability of Cummins’ products across diverse operating conditions.
  • Influencing Design Through Simulation : Your use of modeling and simulation tools will guide design decisions by predicting product performance at system, sub-system, and component levels, ensuring functional integrity and compliance with requirements.
  • Ensuring Seamless System Integration : You will manage product interfaces and interactions across system boundaries, developing integration plans that streamline diagnostics and corrections while maintaining performance within specified limits.
  • Resolving Complex Product Issues : You will apply structured problem-solving methodologies to identify root causes, implement data-driven solutions, and prevent recurrence, safeguarding customer satisfaction and product integrity.
  • Validating Product Capability : Through rigorous verification and validation planning, you will assess product risks, negotiate requirements, and evaluate test results to confirm that product solutions meet or exceed expectations.
  • Translating Stakeholder Needs into Requirements : You will convert stakeholder inputs into clear, verifiable system requirements, track their lifecycle, and assess the impact of changes, ensuring design alignment and project control.
  • Documenting and Sharing Technical Knowledge : Your ability to capture and communicate technical insights will promote knowledge transfer, enhance team productivity, and support informed decision-making across the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:   

  • Stakeholder Collaboration and Influence : You must proactively engage with technical managers, project leaders, engineers, and supplier partners to gather input and deliver actionable recommendations that drive quality product decisions.
  • Decision-Making Agility : Applying your academic foundation and practical experience, you will need to make timely, informed decisions on project execution, test planning, and cross-disciplinary coordination without compromising quality.
  • Mastery of Engineering Processes and Tools : Success requires fluency in processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, and FIRG, along with tools like 7-step problem solving and design review checklists to ensure robust and repeatable outcomes.
  • Independent Project Leadership : You will be expected to lead smaller-scale projects or own complex components with full accountability, navigating ambiguity and delivering results with minimal oversight.
  • Process Improvement and Systems Thinking : You should actively contribute to the development and refinement of work processes across your discipline, enhancing efficiency and consistency at the business unit level.
  • Mentorship and Team Coordination : Coordinating technicians and mentoring junior engineers—either directly or through influence, will be essential to building team capability and ensuring knowledge transfer.
  • Technical Depth and Specialization : Operating as a recognized expert within your team, you must continue to deepen your technical proficiency and provide guidance that shapes the direction of your projects.
  • Competency Focus Areas : To excel, prioritize building strength in the following competencies identified by the Hiring Manager: Communicates Effectively, Drives Results, Decision Quality, Manages Complexity, and Builds Networks. These will amplify your impact across technical and organizational dimensions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSME (MSME preferred). Requires a minimum of 4 years of full time direct, practical experience to include:
  • Design experience with castings components e.g. off-highway axles
  • Demonstrated proficiency in CREO and CREO Simulate is required; experience with ANSYS is preferred
  • Experience in New Product Development
  • Creation and maintenance of DFMEA and DVP&R tools.
  • Manage all aspects of engineering products according to customer requirements with focus on coordinating project timing, costs, test plans and prototype builds.
  • Create preliminary concepts of component/systems and work with designers to release detailed drawing packages.
  • Identify, verify and implement solutions to warranty or quality problems that affect product performance.
  • Excellent understanding of static analysis, fatigue analysis and familiar with fundamentals of dynamic and kinematic studies

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with Off-highway & specialty vehicle products and systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of vehicle dynamics 
  • Experience with geared systems 
  • Experience with cost reduction activities and processes (VA/VE)
  • DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing / Design for Assembly) 
  • DFSS (Design for Six Sigma)
  • Onsite Position - Hybrid work expectation: 3- day office 2-day WFH

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
