Job Description

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is designed to promote scientific activity and standards of care for patients, providers and healthcare payers, and to ensure that they have access to all the practical and clinically relevant information and options they need to use AbbVie products effectively and safely. 

  1. Coordinate scientific and technical work to strengthen professional and credible relationships with opinion leaders and external experts of strategic importance to AbbVie.
  2. Ensure AbbVie's strong scientific and medical representation in key academic centers by facilitating research and educational initiatives, while responding to requests for medical and scientific information about products or areas of therapeutic interest for AbbVie.
  3. It helps internal teams, such as the sales and marketing team and members of the brand promotion team, to develop their scientific and technical expertise by presenting the latest news in the field.  It maintains a transdisciplinary collaboration with other members in the territory, while maintaining its operational independence.
  4. Participates in the initiation, supervision and follow-up phases of clinical trials and medical projects initiated within the therapeutic area for which MSL is responsible (e.g. post-market clinical activities such as register/database-based projects, epidemiological studies, post-authorization (phase IV) safety studies).  All these activities must be conducted in accordance with applicable laws, guidelines, codes of best practice, local Standard Operating Procedures (POS) and AbbVie Research and Development POS.
  5. Interact with opinion leaders to promote the ideas and proposals of Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS) to gain the support of global and local medical teams, as appropriate.
  6. Represents the contact person within the medical marketing team that external opinion leaders and experts from a specific geographic area can reach to meet their scientific information needs in a specific therapeutic area and, upon request, provides information on relevant AbbVie medicines to promote their safe, effective and appropriate use.
  7. Delivers documented presentations on scientific topics for physicians, individually or in groups (at meetings, medical sessions, etc.), when requested, but specifically targeting opinion leaders at levels 1 and 2.
  8. Participates in the selection process to identify appropriately qualified opinion leaders that the Company would like to co-opt as collaborators — such as potential collaborators in the field of research, or for advisory and educational positions (Advisory Councils, congresses, symposia, etc.); at the same time must maintain a high level of scientific integrity or educational during these cooperative endeavors.
  9. Facilitate the exchange of information in the medical and scientific fields — for example, competitive analysis and medical strategies, educational activities — and facilitate communication, where appropriate, within the Company.
  10. Participation in relevant scientific meetings and conferences. Collaborate with internally interested agencies to develop summaries of key data and other relevant scientific information and to publicize Abbvie's strategic priorities and initiatives.
  11. At their request, assist physicians who request AbbVie medicines for a specific patient indicated or as compassionate use, in compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  12. Provide relevant opinion leaders/external experts and internal clinical and medical teams with technical and scientific assistance for publications of medical or scientific interest.
  13. It is responsible for ensuring that all activities and interactions are conducted in compliance with all applicable national, global and local laws, regulations, guidelines, codes of conduct, Company policies and accepted standards of best practice in the field.

 


Qualifications

  • A high academic training (e.g. Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Science) in a relevant scientific field is preferable, but candidates licensed in a relevant discipline with demonstrated experience are also considered.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining a high level of expertise in the assigned therapeutic field as well as medical research in general.
  • Solid knowledge of the pharmaceutical environment and the role of the medical marketing department in achieving the medical and scientific objectives of a pharmaceutical company.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the field of scientific methodology applied to clinical research and current legislative/regulatory control activities applicable to this research.
  • Ability to assimilate complex knowledge about new areas and environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation and communication skills and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain close collaborative relationships with opinion leaders, physicians and other healthcare decision-makers.
  • Preferably a good grasp of English, written and oral level.
  • Strong customer-oriented approach.
  • Explicit commitment to respect relevant rules and procedures and to uphold scientific integrity and quality
