Job Description

At AbbVie, we believe the power of partnership accelerates innovation and delivers transformative medicines to patients faster. As Director, Global Alliances, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and managing AbbVie’s most strategic external collaborations—from discovery through commercialization—with a focus AbbVie’s Immunology partnerships.

You will support alliance management for complex, high-value partnerships that advance AbbVie’s pipeline. As a bridge between AbbVie and its partners, you will foster transparency, strategic alignment, and a shared vision for success. You’ll proactively anticipate challenges, resolve issues, and create the conditions for collaboration that drive scientific and business impact.

In this role, you will support strategic business reviews at key contractual decision points, delivering clear, data-driven recommendations to senior leadership. When necessary, you will participate in the negotiation of the amendment or restructuring of existing alliances to ensure long-term value creation and performance. You will also play a role in supporting due diligence and business development, assessing, structuring, and negotiating new partnership opportunities that strengthen AbbVie’s global pipeline and enterprise strategy.

This position is a unique opportunity for a strategic, proactive, and future-oriented thinker—a relationship builder and problem solver who thrives at the intersection of science, business and collaboration, and who is motivated by the opportunity to make a remarkable impact in patients’ lives worldwide.

Major Responsibilities

  • AbbVie’s Immunology Alliances:  Realize the potential of AbbVie’s Immunology strategy, driving alignment between AbbVie and its partners to ensure shared vision, effective governance, and seamless execution of AI programs across discovery, development, and commercialization.  Build and maintain trusted partnerships across AbbVie and with our Immunology collaboration partners, fostering collaboration and joint problem-solving.
  • Strategic Reviews and Governance: Manage governance forums, including Joint Steering Committees, to drive data-informed decision-making, assess alliance performance, and provide recommendations at key contractual inflection points.  Act as advocate for AbbVie’s alliances, resolving conflicts and collaborating cross-functionally to facilitate relationships between the partners.
  • Be a Strategic Advisor: Provide forward-looking insights to leadership on alliance health, strategic opportunities, and risk mitigation—helping AbbVie make data-driven, value-maximizing decisions across its portfolio.
  • Support Business Development and Due Diligence: Collaborate with the Search & Evaluation and Business Development team to evaluate, structure, and negotiate new Immunology collaborations; support due diligence and integration planning, ensuring strategic fit and executional readiness.  Support AbbVie’s corporate partnership events to build and strengthen external relationships with existing and future partners.
  • Optimize our Partnerships: Implement and refine processes, tools, and communication frameworks that foster transparency, consistency, and operational excellence across partnerships.
  • Promote Excellence and Partnering Culture: Establish best-in-class alliance practices and represent AbbVie externally as a partner of choice in the global biopharma community.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 5-10 years in pharmaceutical development, commercialization, alliance management, or corporate ventures/external innovation.  Requires an understanding of the research, development, and commercialization of new drugs through past experiences and a good grounding in scientific, development, regulatory and commercial concepts in both early and late-stage development programs.  Familiarity with legal and contractual governance is preferred.
  • Education: Advanced scientific, legal or business degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, JD, MBA or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Strategic and Business Acumen: Must demonstrate critical analytic thinking for conflict resolution; risk management; organizational alignment; and develop and present strategic proposals to lead to better business outcomes.
  • Communication and Influence: Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive Leadership: Self-starter who anticipates challenges, drives progress independently, and navigates ambiguity with sound judgment and creativity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Demonstrated success operating within matrixed, global organizations, influencing without authority, and delivering results across diverse teams.

Why AbbVie

This is a rare opportunity to shape a cutting-edge area of biopharmaceutical innovation at AbbVie. You’ll work alongside visionary leaders, cutting-edge science, and trusted partners around the world—bringing ideas to life and delivering meaningful impact for patients. Join a high-profile team that thrives on collaboration, strategy, and results, and help define the future of global alliances at the interface of biopharma and tech.
