Citi is seeking a visionary Responsible AI Lead who will report directly to Citi's Head of AI. This leader will be instrumental in refining and executing the firm's Responsible AI strategy, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI governance within a global financial powerhouse.
You will develop and implement robust guardrails that enable Citi to harness Generative AI and Agentic AI on a global scale, while maintaining our high standards and strong controls. Drawing on Citi’s proven history of responsibly scaling AI and its growing range of GenAI applications already in production, this leader will significantly strengthen our established governance frameworks to proactively manage emerging challenges posed by autonomous AI systems. This leader will operationalize a unified firmwide strategy by partnering extensively with First Line of Defense (1LOD) leaders from various business units, functions, and technology teams, as well as critical partners in Risk Management (2LOD) and Internal Audit (3LOD).

An ideal candidate would possess an exceptional blend of real-world experience in AI risk management within banking, significant technical depth in Generative AI, and the strategic vision to anticipate emerging risks and partner effectively with technology teams to implement world-class solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible AI Strategy & Framework Design: Enhance and champion Citi's global Responsible AI strategy, extending the ethical principles and business governance standards that serve as the firm's north star for AI innovation. You will partner with the Second Line of Defense to refine the AI Lifecycle Risk Framework, serving as the primary 1LOD business authority to ensure that every AI use case, across all Lines of Business, is rigorously risk-assessed, aligned with corporate risk appetite, and approved via a streamlined end-to-end governance process.
- Technology Partnership & Guardrail Implementation: Partner closely with Citi's technology teams to translate business and functional risk requirements into technical guardrail specifications. You'll serve as the authoritative 1LOD voice in shaping the technology roadmap for AI safety capabilities, ensuring that automated controls, monitoring systems, and protective measures reflect real-world business needs and regulatory expectations. Your collaboration will directly influence how technical teams implement model governance, bias detection, output validation, and other critical safety features across our AI platforms. In addition, you would work with 3rd party AI vendors to ensure responsible use of AI technology across the firm.
- AI Command Center & Operational Monitoring: Own the business design and operational oversight of the firmwide AI Command Center, enhancing the centralized capability to monitor the health and safety of Citi's AI portfolio. You will drive the business requirements for automated governance, partner with Technology to ensure that real-time monitoring of model performance, fairness, and compliance is embedded into business processes and controls, providing transparent risk visibility to Business Heads, Risk Officers, and Regulators alike.
- Regulatory & Policy Engagement: In partnership with Regulatory Management, serve as the central First Line of Defense executive for AI-related regulatory engagement, acting as the primary point of contact for global supervisors to demonstrate the effectiveness of Citi's guardrails. In partnership with Government Affairs, you will shape the industry dialogue on AI safety, leveraging insights from our Agentic AI Center of Excellence to influence public policy and establish Citi as a standard-setter for the responsible commercialization of autonomous agents.
- 1LOD Risk Partnership & Culture: Foster a unified risk culture across the enterprise by partnering seamlessly with Independent Risk (2LOD) and Internal Audit (3LOD) to identify and remediate control gaps. You will drive the adoption of a "Responsible AI" mindset within the business, ensuring that as Citi reengineers core processes using Agentic AI, robust human-in-the-loop protocols and ethical safeguards are prioritized as fundamental business requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
- AI Experience: 5+ years of demonstrable AI experience, including Generative AI, Machine Learning, and Agentic AI.
- Risk Experience: 10+ years in Risk Management, Technology Strategy, or Regulatory Compliance within a large global financial institution (G-SIB), or a blend thereof.
- Business-Technology Bridge: Proven ability to translate complex business and regulatory requirements into precise technical specifications, influence technology roadmaps with strategic foresight, and drive the adoption of robust solutions.
- Governance Leadership: Proven track record of designing and implementing enterprise-wide governance frameworks (e.g., SDLC, MRM) and driving their successful adoption across complex, matrixed organizations.
- Technical Fluency: Exceptional command of the Generative AI landscape (LLMs, Agents) and the specific compliance challenges they present (Hallucinations, IP rights, Bias), addressing critical areas such as ethical use, data privacy, explainability, and societal impact. Ability to lead the Agentic AI strategy from a comprehensive risk governance perspective.
- Regulatory Stature: Extensive experience driving high-stakes conversations with regulatory bodies, proactively shaping internal policy responses, and actively contributing to external regulation.
- Operational Execution: Demonstrated ability to build end-to-end operational capabilities, defining clear metrics (KPIs/KRIs) and optimizing operational flows.
- Thought Leadership: A strong portfolio of relevant publications or presentations, demonstrating thought leadership on enterprise AI risk management.
- Education: Bachelor's degree required; Master's/MBA in Business, Degree in Engineering, Policy, Law, or Risk Management preferred.
