The Principal Engineer for Additive Strategy within Power & Controls supports the development & execution of the additive manufacturing strategy for operations within Power & Controls. This role must understand the current state of AM within the Aerospace & Defense Industry and the direction it’s moving, and how that translates to the 5-10 year technology roadmap and overall AM strategy. The Principal Engineer will directly support alignment of the materials, products & manufacturing technology roadmaps within P&C to meet tangible business goals. The candidate must understand the product development & certification requirements within Aerospace & Defense and work with leaders, individual IPTs, and supply chain to educate & accelerate the path to production. Products include but are not limited to Fuel Controls and nozzles, Actuators, Heat Exchangers, Generators, Pumps, Air Turbine Starters, Valves, and Gearboxes. This role works closely Value Stream Leads, Technical Chief’s and Quality Assurance leads to ensure alignment & standardization of this emerging technology.
What You Will Do
- Develop, manage, measure and drive projects and initiatives to ensure successful completion within planned time and budget constraints while meeting customer expectations.
- Develop long-term plans to improve manufacturing productivity via standardization, advanced methods, tools and processes and sourcing.
- Develop investment and technology strategy to support business capture strategy and growth.
- Collaborate with manufacturing sites to provide manufacturing engineering technical support for both factory operations and design teams.
- Champion a strong customer centric culture which empowers the team through trust. Develop and direct strategies to align the manufacturing engineering team with business objectives.
- Key stakeholder for Operations for all additive Technology Development Plans (TDP) and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) assessments.
- Define & provide oversight of development activities for R&D teams within Collins & RTX that are in support of the P&C AM roadmap
- This schedule for this position is Monday – Friday from 8AM-4:30PM. This is a hybrid role, requiring 3-4 days on site a week, to be determined with your manager upon hire depending on business needs.
- This is a hybrid role that can be worked either from West Des Moines, IA or Windsor Locks, CT.
What You Will Learn
- Gain insight into the current state and future trends of additive manufacturing (AM) in the Aerospace & Defense industry, and how these trends shape a 5-10 year technology roadmap.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of product development and certification requirements specific to Aerospace & Defense, enabling effective collaboration with IPTs and supply chain partners.
- Gain experience in collaborating with manufacturing sites and engineering teams to provide technical support and drive alignment with business objectives.
- Learn how to develop and implement investment and technology strategies that support business capture and growth objectives.
- Gain advanced knowledge of full suite of product line within the Power and Controls business unit.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience.
- Must be a U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
Qualifications We Prefer
- B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering
- 5 years’ experience with Additive Manufacturing Powder Bed Fusion, preferably within the Aerospace & Defense industry.
- Experience leading an advanced engineering team
- Aerospace industry experience
- Program management experience with complex development programs
- Experience building effective internal and external customer relationships

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
