Job Description

Under the direction of the Research and Development Environment, Health, and Safety (R&D EHS) management, this individual will provide guidance on R&D matters and training to employees and contractors in AbbVie Irvine R&D. The individual will communicate and collaborate with local EHS team members and stakeholders to implement and align programs and R&D EHS policies which drive change and build a positive safety culture at our site.

This position is responsible for helping the local R&D EHS team with ensuring safety of the employees, assuring a safe working environment, protecting the environment and the property, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting the team with regulatory inspections conducted by local agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Contractor safety and Critical Safe Work support for major and minor R&D construction and renovation projects.
  • Revise, update and improve R&D EHS documentation stored in various Document Management Systems (DMS’s).  Facilitate the review and approval cycle for these documents to ensure timely effectiveness.
  • Work with R&D training coordinators to update associated training content in our LMS to match document revisions.
  • Lead and conduct EHS risk assessments of site/lab processes and equipment (e.g. machine guarding survey, office ergonomic evaluation) and engage with stakeholders on developing appropriate actions and recommendations to mitigate risk.
  • Research and recommend EHS technical guidance or solutions to assure compliance with regulatory and internal company requirements and to address the EHS problem or concern or program gap.
  • Conduct laboratory Gemba walks with site leadership.  Document findings, action items and recommendations, and prepare and distribute related summary reports.
  • Assist the R&D EHS team with the successful integration of sitewide regulated waste management team.
  • Conduct an audit of existing laboratory signage for accuracy and compliance with local Hazard Communication requirements.
  • Assist the R&D EHS team with the completion of the 2026-2027 industrial hygiene plan.
  • General knowledge of general industry Environmental, Health and Safety programs and requires knowledge on local, Cal/OSHA, DTSC, AQMD and EPA regulations.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) plus 5+ years of EHS related experience or Master’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) and 3+ years of EHS related experience.
    • EHS or Engineering professional certification is preferred, but not required.
  • Working experience in implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, and managing cross functional teams.
  • Ability to establish measurable project goals and implementation plans, balance conflicting work demands, and develop action plans.
  • Ability to develop standards and/or policies that meet business objectives.
  • Ability to actively listen, build, and maintain effective working relationships with internal/ external colleagues and stakeholders, and resolve conflict constructively.
  • Ability to successfully manage project and programs.
