Job Description

Purpose
The Manager, Global Logistics at AbbVie will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end commercial programs and distribution activities for drug products, including cold-chain integrity, 3PL management, and regulatory compliance.

This role will also support logistics needs for clinical programs at Abbvie and will be responsible for ensuring transfer of GMP and non-GMP materials throughout entire AbbVie global supply chain. This individual will work closely with CMC leaders, Supply chain, Quality, and other relevant functions, as appropriate to ensure timely and accurate distribution of materials needed to support external network operations.

This role drives strategic transportation planning to optimize costs and service levels while ensuring uninterrupted product flow to customers, partners, and distributors. The manager will lead a team of 1-3 Transportation Analysts, focusing on performance management, continuous improvement, and the application of data analytics to transportation strategies. The incumbent will manage several small to medium size projects concurrently or become the lead project manager for one to two large scale projects.

Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day movement of antibodies, intermediates, drug substance/product and packed finished goods shipments across the AbbVie network (including 3rd party warehousing locations and CMOs), ensuring adherence to GDP/GxP regulations and internal SOPs.
  • Manage specialized cold-chain distribution, including temperature-controlled packaging, lane qualification, monitoring, and carrier performance.
  • Coordinate the review and approval of GXP controlled documents for shipments by working closely with QA.
  • Develop and implement transportation cost-savings initiatives (year-over-year savings), utilizing data analytics to evaluate network efficiency.
  • Monitor and report on KPIs (on-time delivery, lane compliance, transport costs) to senior leadership.
  • Responsible and manage broad based complex logistics optimization initiatives designed to respond to the requirements of AbbVie’ s customers, within the Region, and to do so in the most cost effective way possible.
  • Ensure total compliance with regulatory requirements including Federal Drug Administration (FDA), ISO, Certified Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and other Quality Management System requirements supporting logistics-related audits.
  • Ensure all records (both paper and electronic records) are stored and retained per quality system requirements.
  • Act as the primary point of escalation for carrier and 3PL vendor issues, conducting quarterly business reviews to drive service improvements.
  • Primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for SAP routing setups in its region and main contact to connect transportation issues with key business analytics and BTS organizations.
  • Responsible for governance meetings with main freight forwarders including monthly business reviews and quarterly business reviews assuring main logistics providers are keeping their service levels at the best cost.
  • Subject matter expert for transportation sustainable margin improvement projects with main US & Canada freight forwarders and third party logistics.
  • Responsible for investigating, identifying, analyzing, developing and in some cases implementing world class logistics information systems which can be used to reduced corporate supply chain costs while maintaining or improving service in line with departmental goals. Including global and in market Transportation Management Systems (TMS) management.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop a team of Transportation Analysts, delegating coordination of daily operations (schedule pickup and delivery, shipment tracking), analytical projects and fostering a high-performance culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Engineering, or Business Administration. MBA degree is beneficial.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in logistics planning, distribution operations, transportation operations, and project management, with a strong preference for experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors.
  • 2 or more years of experience managing direct reports preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with regulatory guidelines for shipping biological materials (high-toxicity substances) and experience in cold chain management (temperature-controlled logistics) preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred) and Transportation Management Systems (TMS).
  • Strong analytical capabilities to identify inefficiencies, model logistics scenarios, and prepare data-driven presentations (Excel, Power BI).
  • APICS (Certified Supply Chain Professional, CSCP / Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution, CLTD) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a cross cultural work environment
  • Experience working across geographies, and with international stakeholders is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and both verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Proven ability to deliver cost savings and operational efficiency.
  • Ability to manage high-pressure, fast-moving situations and resolve disruptions.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proficiency with common software tools (MS Project, PowerPoint, MS Word, Excel) and techniques (plans, schedules, presentations). Strong knowledge of business financial systems and tools.
  • International or local regulatory/QA knowledge is desirable.
