We are looking for a highly organized and diligent Development Engineer for the Avery Dennison Performance Tapes business. The successful candidate will work in the R&D department and will report to the Research & Development Manager focusing on product developments for Medical applications.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:
- Lead and drive medical product development from concept to commercialization. Projects include new product development and introduction, and maintenance of existing product lines.
- Translate product requirements into product specifications by selecting and testing appropriate materials, product designs, and manufacturing processes
- Manage and communicate the status of projects: prepare project plans, determine timelines and resources, present and effectively communicate information and progress to cross-functional teams and management
- Act as the R&D project leader to interface externally with customers and suppliers to define projects, communicate progress, identify solutions to technical issues, and demonstrate applied knowledge.
- Develop products following the New Product Design and Development Process and Stage Gate principles. Own design control requirements including creation of detailed specifications and design verification and validation plans and reports.
- Assist in the investigation of customer complaints and nonconformances as required.
- Develop test methods for new products.
- Assist with product risk management.
- Leverage internal and external experts to accomplish goals (e.g., Vendors, Research Institutes)
- Conduct literature and patent searches and give technical updates. Generate intellectual property disclosures as the opportunities arise and assist with patent filings.
- Independently determine and develop creative approaches to solutions.
- Provide hands-on technical support towards sales and marketing and manufacturing

Qualifications
- Master’s or preferably PhD degree in Polymer Science or Chemistry.
- 1-3 years product development experience required, experience with polymers, plastics and/or pressure sensitive adhesives preferred
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong preference for Technical Writing experience. Must be able to write technical documents clearly.
- Hands-on ability to analyze and creatively solve problems.
- Good knowledge of statistics (experience with Minitab is a plus).
- Ability to work in a team environment and interface effectively with cross-functional groups to define and execute overall requirements.
- Understanding of applicable computer systems, such as Microsoft Office, statistical software, ERP systems and other function-specific software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational and project management skills and attention to detail.
