Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Molecular Screening and Characterization group within AbbVie’s Small Molecule Therapeutics and Platform Technology organization at our Chicago-area research site. This group is responsible for implementing and executing biochemical and cellular assays for high throughput screening and providing assay support for lead generation and optimization efforts in medicinal chemistry. As a member of this group, the Senior Scientist will be responsible for conceiving and executing research that achieves both project and area goals. The ideal candidate will have broad and demonstrated expertise in biochemistry and in vitro pharmacology, and will work with disease biology teams to develop, optimize, and execute novel assays suitable for preclinical drug discovery in high throughput settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and apply biochemical and pharmacological principles to develop and run in vitro assays and high throughput screening campaigns, conduct MOA studies and SAR analyses and deliver high-quality screening data to drive lead series identification, optimization and beyond.
  • Analyze large high throughput screening datasets, report key trends and interpretations, and translate findings into comprehensive reports/data packages for stakeholders.
  • Maintaining cutting-edge awareness of technical developments and scientific knowledge; proactively applying these to solve problems in a timely manner is necessary.
  • Maintain productivity in the laboratory, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret datasets, and supervise team members as needed.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills to support strategic decision-making, while excelling at multi-tasking and collaborating with a diverse team of scientists to deliver results
  • Collaborate with functional and technical experts; demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment is essential.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and typically 12 years of experience, master’s degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated expertise in biochemistry and cell biology with experience in various assay technologies, automation, and high-throughput screening approaches highly desired.
  • Demonstrated history of managing multiple hit generation/lead generation projects from assay development through execution while tracking timelines, deliverables, and serving as key point of contact for stakeholders is essential.
  • Proven record in biochemical and cellular mechanistic studies; knowledge of GPCR assays and cellular signal transduction strongly preferred. Experience with high-content imaging is a plus.
  • Expertise in data analytical tools (TIBCO Spotfire, MS Access etc.); demonstrated ability to train and mentor scientists, establish best practices, and support decision-making.
  • Prior experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the discovery and advancement of novel therapeutic platforms.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with a proven track record of problem-solving.
