Purpose

The Director, Value & Access Communications is a pivotal role responsible for shaping and advancing AbbVie’s reputation, narrative, and credibility among policymakers, influencers, and stakeholders in the United States and internationally. Reporting to the Senior Director, Commercial Communications & Public Affairs, this role sits at the intersection of communications, advocacy and reputation management and will play a critical role in supporting AbbVie’s commercial success amid a rapidly evolving global policy environment.

As a strategic partner to our global commercial business, Corporate Marketing, and the Business Evolution & Strategic Development (BESD) team, the Director will lead creative campaigns and integrated public affairs strategies that elevate AbbVie’s thought leadership and voice on complex policy issues, reinforce the value of our medicines, and strengthen trust with decision-makers and patient communities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Public Affairs lead supporting BESD and the IRA team, developing AbbVie-led communications and media strategies for global and U.S. policy issues, including MFN, PBM reform, and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
  • Serve as Public Affairs lead for value and access initiatives, articulating the value of AbbVie’s medicines in key policy discussions including PDABs, ICER, and other value assessment forums.
  • Develop and execute multi-channel corporate and consumer awareness campaigns in partnership with Corporate Marketing to establish AbbVie’s brand and leadership presence in the D.C. beltway and targeted congressional districts.
  • Lead enterprise reputation management through continuous monitoring of media, public sentiment, and competitive or opposition messaging; implement rapid-response strategies as needed.
  • Prepare and coach AbbVie executives for public forums and media engagements; facilitate high-visibility leadership.
  • Serve as liaison to International Public Affairs, particularly for advocacy related to MFN and global drug pricing; ensure effective coordination between U.S. and international public affairs activities.
  • Integrate public affairs with BESD, anticipating and preparing AbbVie for shifts in policy, the external environment, and business evolution.
  • Partner with public affairs colleagues to bring an enterprise perspective to brand-specific challenges related to changing policy landscapes.
  • Drives agency partner performance and ensures effective use of AbbVie resources.
  • Ensures compliance by managing review process for external communications materials (press releases, statements, response documents, fact sheets, etc.). Keep various parties apprised of status, timelines, and directional shifts to ensure smooth review process and to meet corporate deadlines.
  • Consistently shares best practices and offers new ideas and thoughts to raise the bar for the Business Unit Communications team.
  • Hybrid work model - 3 days in office (Mettawa)/2 days remotely
