About the team

The Connections, Conversations, and Communications Platform team partners closely with product, engineering, and operations to power Zillow’s customer communication ecosystem—spanning buyer and seller connections, agent communications, and large-scale email and push messaging. You’ll join a high-impact, data-driven group that supports millions of leads, conversations, and campaigns each month, helping teams across Zillow understand performance, improve customer experiences, and unlock new strategic opportunities in how we connect people with homes.

About the role

In this role, you will be the dedicated Data Scientist supporting three core platforms that handle the majority of Zillow’s customer communications at scale: Connections, Conversations, and Communications. You will own the measurement framework, experimentation, and analytical insights that guide how we design, launch, and optimize platform features and campaigns. By building robust reporting, running experiments, and developing lightweight models, you will turn complex data into clear, actionable recommendations that influence product strategy and customer outcomes across Zillow. This is a highly visible role where your work will help ensure our communication platforms operate reliably, deliver high-quality customer experiences, and reach their full potential.

You Will Get To:

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of Weekly Business Review (WBR) dashboards and reports for the Connections, Conversations, and Communications Platforms, partnering with product teams to define and validate key performance metrics (e.g., connection rates, message reply rates, campaign performance).

  • Analyze large, complex platform datasets (e.g., leads, conversations, campaigns) to provide timely, accurate performance insights and uncover trends, patterns, and opportunities for optimization across our communication channels.

  • Partner with product stakeholders to conduct deep-dive and ad-hoc analyses on topics such as dips in connection quality, the impact of external changes (like iOS updates), and adoption of new conversational and communication features.

  • Design, execute, and analyze A/B tests and other experimental designs for feature launches and platform optimizations, including defining success metrics, applying causal inference techniques, and delivering clear post-test readouts and recommendations.

  • Build and integrate basic predictive or heuristic models into platform features to enhance personalization and governance—for example, modeling the value/impact of communications across campaigns or developing conversation sentiment and engagement signals.

  • Collaborate with data engineering and product teams to design and optimize data pipelines and new data products/tables (primarily in Databricks) that power WBRs, experimentation, and client-facing reporting, ensuring data integrity, usability, and scalability.

  • Work closely with cross-functional partners (product, field operations, strategy, and other analytics teams) to translate complex analytical findings into clear narratives and actionable strategies that inform roadmaps and day-to-day decisions.

  • Mentor and support other analysts or partners on best practices in querying, experimentation, and data storytelling, including code reviews and shared standards, to raise the overall bar for analytics across the platforms.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In addition to a competitive base salary and benefits, this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location.

Who you are

  • You have an undergraduate or Master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, engineering, statistics, finance, or similar) or equivalent practical experience applying quantitative methods to real-world problems.

  • You bring 5+ years of experience working as a Data Scientist (or similar role) performing quantitative data analysis and complex problem solving using large, noisy datasets such as clickstream or event-level behavioral data.

  • You have a strong understanding of statistical concepts, experimental design, measurement methodology, A/B testing, and causal inference techniques, and you are comfortable applying them to product and platform questions.

  • You are proficient in SQL and Excel and have advanced experience in either Python or R, along with hands-on experience using data visualization tools such as Tableau, Mode, or similar software to build dashboards and communicate insights.

  • You have demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders, and you communicate complex technical topics clearly through written, verbal, and visual storytelling.

  • You have experience with online products and understand how to use data to inform product development, experimentation, and lifecycle decisions in a fast-moving environment.

  • You are comfortable working in modern data environments (e.g., Hive, Databricks, cloud-based data warehouses) and can quickly learn internal tools and systems to access and analyze data effectively.

  • Here at Zillow, we value the experience and perspective of candidates with non-traditional backgrounds. We encourage you to apply if you have transferable skills or related experiences, even if you don’t meet every qualification listed.
